    HuffPo piece on the 2nd...

A link to this HuffPo piece was on the front page of Yahoo. I was feeling masochistic, so I thought I'd take a gander...

The Second Amendment: A Symbol of Freedom or an Invitation to Violence?

You can largely determine where a person will fall in the debate over gun control and the Second Amendment based on their view of government and the role it should play in our lives.

I dislike the The Puff Post, but once in a while they do have a writer who makes sense. I guess so they dont annoy those of us who use our heads for more than a hatrack.

HuffPo: "The Second Amendment: A Symbol of Freedom or an Invitation to Violence?"

You can largely determine where a person will fall in the debate over gun control and the Second Amendment based on their view of government and the role it should play in our lives.

Those who want to see government as a benevolent parent looking out for our best interests tend to interpret the Second Amendment's "militia" reference as applying only to the military.

To those who see the government as inherently corrupt, the Second Amendment is a means of ensuring that the populace will always have a way of defending themselves against threats to their freedoms.

And then there are those who view the government as neither good nor evil, but merely a powerful entity that, as Thomas Jefferson recognized, must be bound "down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution." To this group, the right to bear arms is no different from any other right enshrined in the Constitution, to be safeguarded, exercised prudently and maintained.

The founding fathers, in their writings, are very clear about what the intent of the 2nd Amendment and having an armed populace. Just keep quoting them, these folks won't take "our" words for it, but they can't dispute historical facts and quotes from the likes of Jefferson, Adams, et al.

The article is a good read, although it totally ignores the main reason people buy guns. Most people don't buy guns to prepare for some possible future revolution against the government, most people buy guns cause they don't want to be murdered by criminals. That's far more important than being on guard against some future tyrannical regime here in the USA.
