So.....now that it's 2017, can you legally complete a 80% pistol as:
SS+BBv2
SS+featureless
???Comment
-
SS+BBv2 = unknown until there is ever a court case, but the general opinion is it's ok
SS+featureless = there's no such thing as a featureless pistol with a magazine outside the pistol gripComment

I have one.
It's a Coonan FAL receiver that was marked on a variance for another 07.
I got the very first 1 of the first batch of 10 receivers that he had made.
The 07 ordered two different types of receivers and Coonan used the same sequence of serial numbers across both types.
When the ATF found the same sequence of numbers used across different models during a compliance check, they made the 07 pull the sold receivers back from the customers and change the serial number on one type.
The 07 added "ATF" to the end of the serial and re-DROS'd the receiver to me again to reflect the change.

The 100+ other guns in my safes ALL have serial numbers that end in a number.Randall Rausch

From TM:
It all has to be legible and visible and at LEAST .003" below coating. So it needs to be on the outside of the receiver.
I had a bullpup shotgun that used a Mossberg 500 under the bullpup stock. The stock covered the serial number so the manufacture made a real ugly hole in the stock so the number could be read. They would not have done that if it wasn't required.
Now someone will chime in and say "that was the serial number, not the name!" True so I default back to TM statement above.Comment

Another point of differentiation between serial numbers and all the other markings; on plastic guns, it's only the serial number that needs to be marked on a metal insert.I had a bullpup shotgun that used a Mossberg 500 under the bullpup stock. The stock covered the serial number so the manufacture made a real ugly hole in the stock so the number could be read. They would not have done that if it wasn't required.

And a cool story it was, but it shows an extraordinary exception. Since serial numbers were not even required until 1968 I'm sure there are other exceptions out there.
The 50 or so store bought guns in my safe also all end in numbers.
I do have a Mossberg 500 (from the early 60's) and a 45/70 Remington rolling block from 1879 that NEVER had serial numbers. I don't mind putting one on the beater Mossberg but I'll be damned if I'll mark the rolling block. I think that one may be exempted but I'm not 100% sure.Comment

Both of those guns are C&R.I do have a Mossberg 500 (from the early 60's) and a 45/70 Remington rolling block from 1879 that NEVER had serial numbers. I wonder if there is a specific exemption to the post 1968 markings requirements for C&R guns?
I'm sure that the whole "ghost gun" thing should only apply to self-made guns.Randall Rausch
