Yes. Any handgun within 1000 feet of a school that is on publicly-accessible property must be in a locked case (barring any other exceptions like CCW permit).

You are talking about carrying a handgun in your vehicle on your seat, unconcealed. I was illustrating that in most situations, an unconcealed handgun is legal without the case.

E Pluribus was adding in the fact that you can "open carry" a handgun on your front seat as well, but you can NOT be within 1,000 ft. of a school (GFSZ) while you do this. It is essentially a VERY impractical way of carrying a handgun, since there area schools all over the place in populated areas and you would have to know your route VERY well.
For someone from Los Angeles, I would agree. I frequent many small towns with only 2-3 schools. In those towns and surrounding areas, it is very practical.

Ok another question so if my weapon is in my condor messenger bag LOCKED and I'm on my way home from work and have to stop for gas or food whatever and I dot want to leave my LOCKED bag in my car for whatever reason.is it illegal concealed carry if I put my bag on and go into the store with my bag LOCKED? I do not intend to do this but just want to make sure I can't.

Note that simply locking together zipper pulls on a soft sided bag may not be considered a locked container. Try the experiment in the video in this thread:

If the trunk of a car is considered to be a locked container could you in theory say build a weapon holder on the inside of the trunk lid and a mag holder on the inside trunk wall so your weapon could almost ready to go when you pop the trunk of corse the weapon would be unloaded. Would or could that be legal? I know kinda a stupid question just always thought that would be cool to do.
Just make sure that you never open the trunk while inside a school zone for any reason. That includes fixing flat tires or otherwise breaking down. What if your vehicle needs to be towed? What are you going to do with the weapon?

You bring a very good point....guess I didn't think about that. I was also just wondering if it was legal at all. But you have to admit it would be pretty cool if it was done right.

Completely legal to carry this bag with you just about anywhere you go, barring government buildings and a handful of other places (just be sure you KNOW these places before trying this.) This is what typically is referred to as LUCC (locked, unloaded, concealed carry) - you should do a little search on this site for more info on this topic.

You would also need to stay away from actual school grounds, as ammo is illegal there without an LTC.

Every place in California has to be posted to prohibit firearms, or they are not prohibited, and most of those do not have the force of law.

Same rules apply - a handgun is a handgun in the eyes of the law. Except when those eyes are human eyes and they decide to freak out if they ever see your evil looking AR pistol or Draco. In other words, it's legal, but be prepared to do a lot of explaining clam up and let your lawyer do a lot of explaining, if you ever need to use it.

To me that's a little too close to the "mag magnet" problem. If it's just stuck in there and only needs to be turned, I wouldn't count on that as being locked - especially since once the key is in the slot, technically the lock is unlocked. A lot of people (myself included) use a combination lock that is a single number away from open - voila! Locked!

I keep my 9mm in a small locking satchel i got from the gun show, i keep that in my knapsack. I work in L.A. so........ I have had only one run in with johnny law since doing this and he just wanted to see the gun and see the ammo in the mags. As long as it is locked up you should be good to go. Just be sure to abide by the rules and keep cool should you need to unlock that bad boy in an emergency.
