Boinking Linda Ronstadt? Back then? I'd hit it.
Breaking NASA's monopoly on manned spaceflight? That would have been the greatest thing anybody could have done. We'd be on Mars right now.
Viewed through the lens of the non-entities who've had the job since then (Pete "electricity deregulation and Chinese food up a tree" Wilson? Grey "most descriptive politician name ever" Davis? Arnold "If my last name was Jones I'd never have gotten this job" Schwarzenegger?) he doesn't look that bad.
He seems to have done about as well as Mayor of Oakland as anybody could hope for in that ungovernable cesspool, and he's been the best AG (for us) in a generation...
We could do a lot worse.

Me thinks there is a good deal of irrational exuberance in the CalGuns camp. Asking a question can be done for two reasons, one is that you want an answer that you had not thought of, the other is so that others hear an answer that you are hoping will ensue. Some of the questions posed by the court were likely of the first reason. With limited time allotted, unfortunately sometimes the latter reason goes unfulfilled.
If I were to hazard a prediction, I would say that the 9th would delay any decision until after SCOTUS at least hears the other two cases, and then comes down with a near parallel affirmation of the original 3 judge panel.
