A wise uncle of mine once said that if you are thinking about burying guns, instead of burying, it might be time to use them...

You bury a firearm - what do you include with it?

If I were to bury anything, it would probably be an AR-pistol, 2-4 mags, 100-200 rounds of 5.56, a 38/357 revolver, 50 rounds of pistol ammo, misc tools and essentials to get the guns working/assembled. Anything more is kind of a waste. If I have to dig up my buried cache then im not looking for a prolonged, stand your ground fight. I’m looking to get out of dodge fast with some protectionComment

These threads are funny because we always get a bunch of people saying how you shouldn't bury guns, you should keep them at the ready. Of course, that's sound logic, if you own 1 gun. But if you've already got all the guns you'll ever need/want, then I see no problem with burying one or a few guns that you don't care about ever seeing again for "just in case". If I've got a collection of 150 guns (I wish), am I really going to miss the buried Mossberg I got at a Big 5 sale?
Anyways, that's why I didn't want to discuss pros and cons of burial in this thread. Everyone has reasons why they would or wouldn't do it. This thread assumes the reader has already made the decision that they will, and merely seeks advice on what to include with said weapon(s).
My cache I'll be burying is something I fully expect to never see again. Nothing that I care about or that has any real value is going in there. Probably an AR or two, maybe a pump shotgun, maybe a 9mm pistol or two and a 22lr rifle. Enough ammo (1000rds each?) and mags for each, and whatever other crap I decide should go with it. Probably less than $1500 total invested in it, which is IMO pretty cheap for such a valuable insurance policy. I don't plan to see a big payout from my homeowner's insurance policy any time soon either, and I hope I never will, but it's still good to have it just in case.Last edited by CandG; 04-11-2019, 10:00 AM.Comment

I would assume when talking about burying a firearm the intent is to bury now while you have access to firearms, ammo, magazines, etc to mitigate a future scenario where all firearms have been outlawed/confiscated - you would be able to dig up your cache and be better armed than the average. So based on this what will want when this happens - well, if all guns and ammo are outlawed then you would want a very small concealable handgun, with a box of ammo. I would think a NAA .22Mag mini revolver would be a great gun to have in that type of environment. You could fit a mini revolver, a box of 50 rounds, & a bottle of Hoppes gun oil into a very small pelican case and bury it just under the edge of a concrete patio or driveway - pretty easy for you to get out, but basically impossible for anyone who didn't already know where it is. Also the rebar in the concrete will prevent metal detectors from finding it. If there is an overhanging tree or cover it would even prevent satellite images from seeing you bury or dig up. I'd throw in a multi-tool, a knife, a flashlight, and a bic lighter. I'd put a sealed MRE in with it, all that digging is going to make you hungry.Comment

All this talk of burying guns/ammo/liquor makes me wonder how deep a cache has to be to protect it from a raging forest fire.
I remember hearing a news story a while back, last year I think, about a bunch of burned up weapons and ammo caches that were in drums found after a forest fire. I would think dirt would be a great insulator... maybe not... I don't know. How deep would you have to go in order to protect it?Comment

Maybe you only need to carry it a couple hundred yards, though. The cache doesn't necessarily need to be miles from home.Comment

Sure but add to that the 1,000 rds of 9mm, 45, 22, plus 40 magazines, and 3 guns like some people are talking about on top of your other bugout gear and your talking some real weight. And that's not even counting water. Even 1 extra pound makes an impact over distance.Comment
