    Finally a newbie to hunting.

I finally took my Hunters Ed class and passed this morning.
I saved myself some time by taking the hunters ed course online.

Now its time to sell or trade one of my 870's for a bolt action.

Or else I'm stuck using one of my FAL's for pig hunting.

Shouldnt the FNFAL be fine for pigs? It shoots a fairly powerful round and is pretty reliable in the field since lots of militaries use it.

Yup. .308 is fine for pigs. Buddy uses his M1A. Just use the right ammo.

I shot a 175lb wild pig Saturday with my Remington 870 20ga.with rifled slugs.
Dropped him on the run at about 25 yards. Pig dropped hard and fast. Hit her right behind the shoulder blade. Don't give up the 870 just yet!

Thanks for the advice. I actually have 2 870's so giving up one isnt a problem.
I just wanted a bolt action since that would make me look more like a hunter.

I thought going out with a FAL for pig hunting would make me look weird.
Also my mag's are pinned into the FAL and if I'm right, aren't I limited to only 5 rounds in the magazine when hunting?

Good luck and happy hunting. This was my first pig. Two buddies skinned and gutted it and then we took it to the butcher. Make sure you have your pig tag. I had to have all my info when we dropped the pig off.

                Thanks A'sDad.
I can't wait to go out and hunt. Hopefully my buddy will have the time to take me out.

The butcher has a side job as a fish and game warden?

maybe its me, but ive always believed that hunting was about harvesting the animal the best you could with what you got -- not really about conforming to the mainstream image of hunting. i plan on hunting with a 64 year old finnish rifle and it doesnt seem weird to me.

No, there are no restrictions on centerfire mag size for hunting.

                      Congrats.

When dropping the pig off on Saturday, the butcher was required to record all harvested game. Hunting license and Pig tag numbers were logged in.

Thanks for all the info guys. Sorry I had so many questions.
Just never hunted before so I want to make sure I get all the info squared away before I go.

Agree, I haven't had time to try this thing in CA called hunting (think it might be a myth) but I hope to this year I have a few good side arms and a sister that wants to try hunting. I hunt out of state and I don't want to take her there and find out she can't shoot an animal so I hope to try something local this year.

I want to let her shoot my 243 and I'm going to try to use a Mosin I just picked up or my marlin 44. I think it would be fun to hunt with a C&R.

C&Rs seem to be cool alternatives to standard rifles. there's usually more challenge involved with irons and the rifles are just as capable of taking down game as hunting rifles (i know the finnish m39 is still used in finland, which has a thriving hunter culture). ive heard k31s make for great curio hunting rifles. most curios are more than enough for standard game anyways.
