    Why do people hunt coyotes?

I'm not a hunter and I didn't realize so many people hunted coyotes. I can understand the big game that you take home and eat, but why coyotes? Are there too many of them?

PS. I'm not some anti-hunter guy trying to troll, I am sincerely asking this question.

      I used to hunt Coyotes.

Have been thinking about it again.

the sad truth is in some areas coyote population explodes, the more coyotes the more coyotes you have looking for food.

This results in coyotes going into populated areas. In areas where there are farm lands and such, coyotes will attack and kill chickens, rabbits, just about anything they can feed on.

Other threats are to pets and small children.

So you will often find areas where there are too many coyotes and they are causing problems, not only is it open season to control the population, but I think some areas if it is bad enough still pay a bounty on dead coyotes.

Anyway, I think what I say is accurate
      1 Peter 3:15

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect

      2 Corinthians 3:3
You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

Where are there too many? Where can I get a bounty? I just passed my hunter safety course and am looking for a good spot to get my feet wet

They are overpopulated in many areas. I think most areas have stopped paying bounties, though a buddy was telling me as recently as 15 years ago he made $20 for every coyote tail he brought to the city hall building (AR).

In some areas they are a threat to livestock, pets, and (supposedly) children. More notably, as their population explodes, they outnumber their prey and instead of x number of healthy coyotes you have 2x starving coyotes. As long as they are hunted ethically, it is more of a help to their population than it is a harm. From a sporting aspect, being predators, alert, wary, and keen, they are more difficult to hunt than many other animals.

I'm going to take up predator hunting as soon as deer season ends, in the mean time I don't want to be making extra noise on my deer lease. I've already been messing with a few distress calls... they sure piss off the family dog.

Coyotes are some of the worst pests for farmers and ranchers. Every one that can be killed, should be.

Especially in suburban areas, coyotes are becoming a huge problem because they are getting used to people and no longer fearing them. Coyotes are varmint.

I see. OK. What do you do with the bodies?

I'm guessing in Australia, it's open season for rabbits and cane toads!

I think up here in the SF Bay area, the only thing we are overrun with are snails and non-indigenous (sp?) plants. Some fish too I think.

The reason I hunt them now a days is because residents in my area can’t keep small dogs or cats outside without a coyote killing and eating them. Coyotes also spread distemper disease that kills numerous pets. I also hunt them because they are in competition with the game I want to harvest. Coyotes are a formidable advisory when it comes to keeping their numbers in check, especially in rural outlaying area inhabited by humans. Because of the food and water recourses these areas have to offer their numbers are higher than under normal conditions. That alone puts them in the same category as mice or rats.

But I would hunt them anyway, because it keeps my shooting skills up to par, it’s legal, and that’s what I like to do.

If you like coyotes, you should support project coyote dot net and not try to understand why people hunt them. Because you will most likely never understand, you might if you see how they kill, that's all they do is kill. When a coyote responds to a call it's responding to make a kill, not to get petted.

Hey, and by the way I'm not a redneck, and I like President Obama, but I won’t lie to you and say that I like Feinstein, Boxer or Pelosi.

When you are a professional like me you just have to hunt them. I also eat them so they do not get wasted.

Some people eat them. A lot of people say the meat is so bad it is only good for baiting more coyotes.
