It was a good year for elk out here. Not monsters, but they were around. My immediate hunting group of 4 all got elk, 3 of 4 got deer, and one doubled up on deer.

The bucks were out this weekend in B1 southern Humboldt, from Friday evening until Sunday morning our group of 6 took 6 bucks, two forks by junior hunters (both first deer), one 2x3, one 3x3, one 3x4 and one 4x4 by us senior hunters (ranch rule is 3-point one side if you aren't a junior hunter). The rain last week and Saturday morning really helped.

    My son's 3x3, measured 19" from the widest V to V

    My 3x4

    The 2x3

Saturday afternoon, there's 4 in there with 2 more coming...

Saw this 3x4 on the drive out, look at the fat coat on him

A small but mighty buck. I hunted 6 days and hiked well over 40 miles to find him on a hillside 50 yards off the road.

    A zone south black tail

3x3 buck shot right outside of city limit on private land in Santa Clara county. Harvested right around sun rise on Sunday.

He is the only legal buck I saw on the property the entire season and during the preseason scouting. It is a resident deer that lives uphill on neighbor's land. Saw him a total of three times during about 15 trips but he never came down to the property I hunt. Saw tons of does and fawns and one spike buck during the season.

On Sunday morning he apparently trotted downhill in pursuit of a doe. That's when he met Mr. Barnes...

This is my first blacktail. Definitely feel very lucky.

Thank you and Congratulations on your deer. He's a dandy!
Food is definitely the motivator. The only bummer about a small buck is the amount of freezer space it doesn't take up. The upside is the meat should be good. I have 8 more meat tags in Wyoming to top the freezers off and a bull elk tag as well so meat should be good for the year.

No bragging for me. Happy to have filled my seer tag. Drew an early season rifle hunt with a long season. Last week was my planned hunt but even after hiking 36 miles over 3 days, I wasn't successful.

After work tonight I ran up to a spot that is about 90 minutes away for an evening hunt. Heading up the dirt road and what do I see? It was a small buck, but it was legal and since my planned hunt was over, selectiveness was gone.

Stopped the truck and made my way off the road to be legal. Double lung with a suppressed 6.5 creedmore and that was out. Got home before dark.

I shot this decent forked horn Friday morning literally 1/2 hour before sunrise. A zone, Mendocino Co. Private land hunt. I'll be hunting for a big buck for the rest of the season. Of course "big" changes the closer we get to closing...
