Does anyone use a Dutch Oven ? I was thinking about getting one . Saw one at cosco , heavy and the lid could be used as a skillet . I think it was about $45.00 , not bad.

There perfect for the mountains in your jeep truck etc. there good to cook anything in you can think of and wonderful deserts.
i would say best all around camp pot you could have -
I used to cook a BBQ Western dinner for a horseback rental outfit and we used Dutch ovens for making desserts and anything else we wanted. They work very well and make a great addition to a camp site. We used charcoal on the lids and around the sides of the oven to cook but I'm assuming a wood fire would work too.NRA Life Member

love my dutch oven
The freinds that I camp with start pestering me about bringing my dutch oven weeks before we go camping, my cobbler is EPIC! and it is a hoot to cook on them. Get one, do some research and go for it, you wont be dissapointed. Just make sure you get a pre seasoned dutch oven, and check that the lid fits tight, also make sure it has legs, the ones without them are useless in the outdoorsComment

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

If you are going to cook with one on an open fire, get the type with legs and a lid with a rim on it. They make great everything including cobbler.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

They are the best way to cook semi-gourmet while car-camping. They work best with charcoal briquettes since the temperature inside can be correlated to the number of briquettes.Comment

I'm with cannoneer too. Rimmed lid is necessary. I can't believe how cheap these things are, too. briquettes or gathered wood, doesn't matter.
They are IMO a must for every car-camping trip. cobbler is dutch oven 101 and the best starter dish to make, very kid friendly too. If the costco model doesn't work out you can get them from any camping store or surplus store. No-one should be without one of these.
You can even get the (too civilized) wife in on it by showing her the Alton Brown primer on dutch oven cooking then go to town.
The only thing they can't do is go backpacking.Comment

Was actually looking at picking one up myself. Do you mind sharing your equation/findings.WTB: S&W 617 4" 10 shot Pre-LockComment

When my kid was in Scouts, they cooked everything in a D/O. It is easier to control heat using briquettes. Some kid did his Eagle Scout project determining how much heat is generated by each briquette and converting it to the number need to reach the desired temperture for a reciepe. I wish I could find that info now.
They make small D/O that the scouts would take backpacking.
There is nothing taster that a D/O cobbler.Comment

I purchased one from Walmart a couple of years ago made by Cast Lodge that's pre-seasoned already. I purchased it from clearance. Rimmed and legged oven. Heck for $36 versus $47 regular price I'd be a fool not to get it. I've only done a couple cooking from it since I use my cast iron skillet more often.Comment

A Dutch Oven is very useful---cook most anything---get one of larger size - 5.5 qt. or larger as you will find all kinds of things to cook in it---drawback: heavy and takes a long time to cool off. You can often find them on sale at various stores (NEVER pay retail) or Craigslist. And yeah, a cast iron skillet is a good combo with it.Comment
