Unfortunately, it seems that the answer is yes, it does need to be said.

That would be my oops. I linked the wrong filter.

Here is the million gallon version

Evidently you can backwash and refresh all of their "Hollow Fiber Membrane Filters" almost indefinately.

Yeah and when the "hollow fiber" filter freezes it explodes and breaks all the fibers. End of filter!

Do they sell on the assumption that you are Mormon, or will they sell to literally anyone? I ask because I look very non-Mormon... (Long hair, VERY visible tattoos, etc.)

On the order form there is a place to note things like your ward and bishop if you are Mormon. Since I am from Utah and from a very Mormon community I get a lot of people assuming that I am Mormon, especially local Mormons. It gets kind of old. As a result I don't like to pretend in situations like that, so I wrote "Agnostic non member". The woman I gave the form to actually smiled. I'm pretty sure she was clucking sadly in her head, but she gave no outer sign of anything other than professionalism, and nobody came up to me with any sort of proselytizing attempt.

Again, if you have any doubt, call the location that you would like to use and tell them you are not Mormon and are not interested in becoming Mormon (unless you do of course) but would like to use the facility. Then judge for yourself.

Don't let the fact that these are owned and run by the Mormon church dissuade you from taking advantage of a great resource!

It is a good thing for people to know the weakness of their tools. This one has a huge flaw in that if it freezes you will not know it is damaged and it could kill you.

                  "Other Precautions

MSR warns against letting the filter cartridge freeze or dropping it. Freezing evidently damages the filter tubes and it's not hard to imagine expanding ice cracking the casing itself. MSR describes how to test for damage by seeing whether the unit can hold a vacuum. Because the HyperFlow is small, it's not unreasonable to take it into the tent or even stow it in a pocket on really cold nights. For that matter, the vulnerable cartridge itself could be removed and kept warm, and hardly noticed."

Problemchild, if a person has a manufactured filter, ANY filter, that represents the sole source of safe drinking water for himself and his family, and that person lets that filter freeze while full of water........well thats just Darwinism at work!

Thanks for the link. Cool website.

                      Thanks for the info.

I doubt I could ever believe all the stuff they believe, but they are one of my favourite religious groups. I'm sure every group has its rotten eggs, but just about every Mormon I've met has been good people.

I have a question that's slightly off topic. I just bought 50 lbs of dried black beans and 25 of rice from Costco (Thanks problemchild). The black beans say they expire in 2011. Reading here it seems they expire in 30 years? What's what?

Manufacturer's expiration dates aren't there to accurately indicate the shelf life of their food. They are there to encourage you throw away perfectly good food and buy more.

If you pack dried beans in air-tight containers with oxygen absorbers they will keep for decades: http://extension.usu.edu/foodstorage/htm/dry-beans/

I read in a book a while ago that the product may be edible but it will loose nutritional value. Like eating cardboard after a while. The book had a rating on how much the food lost and how much was left after a period of time but I do not remember what it said now.
