    Emergency food

Honeyville Grains sells online and also has a store in Rancho Cucamonga. Lot's of food options.

Unless you eat this kind of food all the time, another good choice is just to increase your stores of food of the types you normall eat. For me this means lots of rice, beans, cans of soup, tomatoes, stock, meats, etc.

Don't forget your water. It's semi-arid here in SoCal, so you'll need to either store water or have a ready source and the means to sanitize it.

Honeyville sells handy 5 gallong jugs for $10 apiece. That's about the largest you can easily carry. They also sell larger ones up to 75 gallons or so.

Pretty awesome place to shop. I was just there the other day.

Their #10 cans are sealed tight with oxygen inhibitors in them and their rice, beans, wheat, etc., all have a shelf life of 5-10 years. I bought some freeze dried meats and other things that don't expire until 2028!!!

WOW, Killer deals, I'm going to check these sources out particularly the LDS center.

LDS Cannery long white rice 50 lbs bulk in bags $16.90

        no math necessary

Agreed. LDS has killer prices on the items they sell. I just wish they carried more than what they do. Rice, beans, wheat, sugar and powdered milk are great staples, but I also need freeze dried meat, TVP, corn, peas, green beans, strawberries, bananas, apples, tomato powder, eggs, cheese, etc......

My kids love the freeze dried fruit and vegetables. They eat them like candy.

Anyone ever ground up hard wheat to make flour for bread? I did it my first time this weekend. Remarkably easy and the bread is fantastic!!

Don't forget the water. Here's a great source for ceramic water filters. You can make your own pour over unit with two, 5 gallon buckets and their kit that includes the filters, spigot, etc.

I agree completely ieshooter, If you only had what you can get from the canneries you wouldn't starve to death you would die from sheer boredom.

I personally am a student and Father of 4 and am on as tight a budget as they come. I have acquired emergency subsistence for a year and will now move on to basic variety and then to luxury foods. My plan will take about two years to complete.

And I also agree regarding emergency water insurance first and foremost no matter where you live. I am close to the American river but wouldn't dream of relying on it in a shtf situation. I have a combination of storage and filtration.

This is the filter I have

They have one for about 60$ that is guaranteed for a million gallons as well and filters to .2 microns but it doesn't filter viruses. We splurged just a little but I figured it was a good splurge.

Actually, if you buy the rice in the Honeyville brick-and-mortar store, it's $21.80 for 50 lbs. LDS is still cheaper, but it's not as bad as it looks.

Actually you cannot just barge in and use there cannery unannounced. You must go with a Mormon or get permission to use their facilities. At least for the FV location.

They sell grain and dried fruit and milk and just about anything you need for a long term food cache at their cost! And they have some serious buying power! Here is a list of locations and here is a price list.

I AM NOT MORMON! You can utilize this resource without fear of missionaries showing up at your door. You can use a fake name and pay cash! They do not care! I think that they actually give a **** about the greater good.

This is the best price you will find for bulk food storage..... period.

                      Go stock up.

Call and ask. In my experience (and my experience involves growing up in Provo Ut surrounded by Mormon family and friends); If you want to shop bulk just go in. If you want to use the equipment, make an appt. (this applies to everyone Mormon or not) You do not need to be escorted by a Church Member.

I suppose you may have experienced something different, but I would be surprised.

If you have any doubt about the location local to you, call them and ask.

I doubt it; as mentioned before you could use a fake name I suppose, but it hardly seems necessary. I've lived next door to Mormons at several times during my life, as well as had the usual number of door-to-door missionaries, and they've always been the most polite, unobtrusive, and just plain "not pushy" folks. Simply saying you're not interested is enough. As a whole I think Mormons are really just good people.

Now, when certain other proselytizers happen by, I'm likely to pull out my copy of Anton Szandor LaVey's Satanic Bible if I want to get into a really entertaining discussion. "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law!" etc. etc.

How many gallons is your version good for? I couldn't find any info on the Sawyer website.

Edit: Oops, I see on the package it can only do 3,000 gallons. If that's true, why do they call it a lifetime filter?

Well you should probably have the attitude, it is their house and you are their guest. If you don't respect that they might have a perspective and voice it there, it isn't a public service you know so you don't need to be there. Respect is key.
