If you are not concerned with the heat treatment and finish of the barrel, you can use either of those methods.
Both those methods will take the barrel over 1200 degrees and the front part of the barrel will get significantly discolored and the heat treatment will get annealed.
Done in an evironment with oxygen, you will get some scaling in the bore which will contribute to increased copper fouling near the muzzle for the remaining life of the barrel.
If you want the barrel to still look/work nice once it is done, a small tig weld is the cleanest method.Randall Rausch

There is a reason the gov. doesn't use ti. in guns. Most parts that use steel work best when made of steel. Parts made from al. don't need to be stronger, smaller etc. Ti. Weighs more than al. And has limeted use that makes any sense in firearm construction. Honestly if you own ti. Stock pile it. I predict the price to increase soon with this Russian debacle.Comment

J.Galt : Will take a few pic today of CH. If you PM me with your E-mail I'll send them to you.
As far as the ultimate CH go's, A forward on left side is my Ideal, but for simplicity the BCM CH Mod 3 is an almost perfect set up, ( you or I can get the latch from BCM ) only problem is Colt made there's a little shorter, and added a couple small guilds on the side, but functions much the same as any other CH.
BCM has taken the pressure off the latch mechanism buy letting the force be transferred to the full back of the CH to reduce stress on the roll pin holding it place, as far as I know , no one has successfully done this well, that's why BCM is KING.
Also steel would not be my choice, but titanium ?? now I think your on to something.
PM with E-mail for pictures, if you get this right you might have a little enterprise on your hands, as there are no others out there.
Good luck however you roll with what you want to do...

ive welded grade 5 tubing without issue, but grade 9 i havent handled. but i would venture to say I wouldent have a problem with a spot weld. all thats needed is a TI pin and a weld splodge from the tig machine.Comment

i should have just said this was a "possibly free machined stuff" thread..it really doesnt have to be titanium, im up for anything!
i just dont know anything about firearms so i have no idea whats what or what would be popular..just trying to find something fun to work on, which means something alot of people will want to discuss and be interested in in some form
can you post the pics of the CH in here? it would help so people can see and discuss it tooComment

i have a firearms related product made of bronze that might be interesting to you. its has product potential and i have the design all worked out. i have drawings and a prototype, i just need a skilled cnc machinist to write the program and make a couple first run production parts to send out for field testing. pm sentComment

<what is this supposed to be? someone wearing a paper hat with an antenna?
can you discuss it in detail here?Comment

Oooh, can you make me a short reach P239 trigger? I'd even pay for it if it fits.

Anyone smart who has a potentially marketable product idea is not going to discuss it publicly until it's ready to release for immediate sale.
If you talk about it before any patent work, you essentially give it away to the public domain.
I have done many jobs where NDA's are required...Randall Rausch

the level of concern for protecting your idea has to be weighed directly against how much money you expect to make from it. id say for anything less than $100k your time would be better spent improving your design and getting it actually made and selling instead of trying to pursue a patent pending or patent which are dubious protections unless you know exactly what you are doing anyways.Anyone smart who has a potentially marketable product idea is not going to discuss it publicly until it's ready to release for immediate sale.

if all you are doing is just modifying an existing design to have a different material or be slightly different thats going to fall squarely under prior art anyways and your patent research will probably end up showing you that you are violating someone elses patent lol
ironically the last 20 or so NDA's I've signed were all for "inventors" who had ideas with the least potential..the urinal with the uric acid powered hair grinder comes to mind..that was a fun dennys lunch. and the places i've worked with the multi million dollar medical devices packed with IP had the least formal paperwork and I had all the design documents all over my personal laptop.
if you've come up with something _truely novel_ and possibly lucrative then by all means get those NDA's signed and find some capital..otherwise you are just ruining the fun of your hobby and making an already complex process even more cumbersome when in the end whats at stake is a few thousand dollars at most anyways
there is plenty of money to be made without having a novel product, especially for homebrew small quantity niche market stuff. people like to support hobbyists and garage machinists. they like the craftsmanship and designs people come up with. thats more where im focused. its fun!Last edited by J.Galt; 03-24-2014, 3:06 PM.Comment
