That's what I was going to say, even if the kit is bought with intent to build a pistol which is really what AMDs are good for, how can you argue something against the BATFE? Seems like a nazi law to have a rule about restricting ownership of potential substances.

    Say:
Bob owns a homebuilt hungarian AKM with legal 16'' barrel and everything is legal. Now if Bob even purchases any AMD65 kit since his legal hungarian rifle can technically accept the AMD's smaller barrel (whether Bob argues it will be used in a pistol or not), it's technically illegal for Bob to even take ownership of an item that can allow illegal SBRs to be formed. Bob is a felon under technical terms of the law.

Now I'm not trying to say anyone that owns a hacksaw in their house and owns any type of gun like a shotgun is a felon for possessing tools to make an SBR but I think everyone kind of understands my point of how strange the constructive intent law is. But it's not affecting me, yet (and hopefully never), so I'll get off my soap box and quit hijacking OP's thread.

Been looking at Bulgarian AK 74 kits all day and most, if not all the ones I've found, come with a new US barrel. Now if I were to buy a parts kit and a separate original barrel would that work?

      If I purchased this kit:

Bulgarian AK74 Kit, 5.45 x 39mm, without barrel (see barrels below), wood furniture, includes all parts which are attached to the barrel as in the below photo, cleaning rod is not included, currently out of mags, mag not included, $195.00

      and this barrel

Original Bulgarian 5.45 x 39mm AK74 Barrel, like new, mounting holes and all machining is done. $120.00

Would I be able to assembly the rifle, complete at the January AK build party,

      OR

Would I have problems with barrel fitting and have to send it out to Turbthis for some work?

Yeah I dont want it to be a PIA for my first build. I found a nice Rommy G kit with matching barrel for pretty cheap I'm gonna use instead.

        Thanks for the help.

              BARREL NOT INCLUDED"

My question is, were can I get a used, ready to mount barrel to go with this setup? I dont want it to be to big of a hassel at the January build party. If I end up buying a new US barrel, would I be able to finish the build at the party? I was told I need to send it to Turbothis if I go that route but I dont understand why. I know the gas port needs to be drilled but what else needs to be done? You guys only have to put up with my stupid questions for a few more months, after the build I wont need to ask anymore. Keep that in mind

IT's possible. However, it depends on who's there to help because it will be time consuming. The goal of the bp's is to get peoples builds done. You have two days though. The receiver is the easy part. For best results, get a surplus Romy barrel.

Tasks to mount a virgin US barrel.

                Headspace.
Mount the barrel components....rear sight base, gas block, front sight.
                Drill the gas port.
May have to also cut the barrel for the handguard latch.
Drill the pin holes for the barrel components.
                Ream the pin holes
                Pin the components.

I don't recommend it as your first build.
No one is going to have those 3mm reamers and proper drill bits for you.

Makes sense thank you. BUT, If I were to find someone selling just a 100% used barrel assembly, would it fit together without much difficulty? Its hard for me to turn down a $99 parts kits when all that is missing is the barrel

**edit** I have access to any size reamer/drill at the shop I work at so thats not really a big deal. I can even pre drill the gas port hole into a virgin barrel if there was a schematic available.

Hopefully that's all you need to do. I've had to turn down and profile blanks before, but when you do that, everything else is cake.
As to the dude with an AMD 12.5" kit, I'll trade you a matching romy for it.

If you are looking at that kit to save money, here's the breakdown in price

                      romy g matching kit - $275-$350

                      CFS kit - $100 + barrel $100 + $100 turbothis labor cost to assemble barrel = $300

the real savings cost is if you already have the tools and knowledge to assemble the barrel correctly. As a first build you're not saving much and you'll save a lot of misery. At a build party environment, there isn't that much time on the presses or help available to devote to a virgin barrel. That's why enthusiast made it a rule that only complete barrel builds will be allowed so that it gives everyone the best opportunity to leave with a working AK by sundown on Sunday

Makes perfect sense. I will stick to an original matching barrel kit. I will hold my questions for a couple days to give you guys a break haha

thats the same kit i used for my first build, got it from centerfire, used a new us barrel, it wasnt too difficult but like stated before it was time consuming and quite a bit more work, im sure you could do it, but because your going to a build party and there is going to be a lot of people there asking for help and trying to finish there build id just stick with a kit with an original barrel.

A matching barrel has already been headspaced to the trunnion and bolt and as such requires just a press in. Non-matching barrel would need the constant headspace check.
A virgin barrel is more work, and is not recommended for your first build. A 100% used barrel would be a better choice and can be finished easier at the BP, it'll take a bit more work though than a matching kit. Mainly the work is around the barrel pin hole.

Did I show you how to check headspace? Any barrel can be checked and have the work done pretty easily if you do it that way. Before anything has to get pressed onto the barrel.

Hey guys, virgin barrels are not as hard as they seem to be. Liveinthedirt just finished his first two builds and they were both with new US made virgin barrels. I think the second barrel assembly took him 3 or 4 hours of beer drinking and BSing with me.
