you probably bought completed lowers what we are trying to build are called 80% lowers which mean you need to do the rest of the 20% work, which then makes it a complete firearm to us in cali thats one of the easiest and to some cheapest way to get a pistol lower

          LOL!!!!!!!!

          We're talking about 80% lowers.
The outer forging is done and the magwell is cut out, but the fire control pocket is not machined.
Legally, it is nothing more than a paperweight. It doesn't become a "firearm" until the FCG pocket is machined.

Why pay as much for an 80% as for a completed lower, and then have to machine it and anodize it to complete it?

          AR15 pistols, my friend!

A stripped lower is written up on the BATFE 4473 as "other", since it is neither a handgun nor a long gun.
The California DROS only allows "long gun" or "handgun".
The stripped lower cannot be processed as a "handgun", both because it's not, and it is also not on the roster, so it is processed as a "long gun".

This presents the problem that you can't build a pistol out of it without running afoul of NFA, since the law is "once a long gun, always a long gun", therefore a barrel shorter than 16" and an OAL shorter than 26" creates a short-barreled rifle. In addition, an OAL less than 30" creates an assault rifle under SB23.

          Sooooooo.....

          We build our own.
It is legal to build a handgun or a long gun for personal use.
The only condition is that it is illegal to build an "unsafe handgun" in California, so when the pistol first becomes functional, it must be in a form that is exempt from the roster.
This means it must be single shot (0-round magazine or "sled"), and dimensionally compliant... specifically, the barrel must be 6" or greater, and the OAL must be 10" or greater.
Since the AR receiver, even without the buffer tube is about 7.5", you only NEED a barrel that is 6" long (but the shortest AR barrels I've seen are 7.5" without the flash hider).

The cool thing is, once the pistol is built, it can be modified, since the roster no longer applies after completion.
Bingo... remove the single shot sled, replace it with a regular 10rd mag, and head to the range!

Practicality? Maybe not. They're fun, but still too big for concealment for personal defense, and the 5.56 round is a little too much for home defense unless you live 2 miles away from your neighbors so you don't have to worry about overpenetration.....
But it's like the Taurus Judge.... we want it because the anti's say we can't have it, but we have found a way to legally have them.

Another good reason (and the reason that I am building mine), is that there are constructive possession issues if you have a "rifle" lower and an upper with a barrel less than 16" long.

The M4 barrel is 14.5", with a 2" flash hider threaded on that takes the length to 16". As long as the flash hider is pinned and not removable, it is legal... but the 14.5" upper without the pinned hider is NOT legal to have in your possession, unless you also have a pistol lower that it can be installed on. The only other way to buy an M4 upper is to have the flash hider pinned in place prior to taking delivery (which is what most people do).

Another good reason is, whether you build it into a long gun or a pistol, it is 100% off the grid.
It's not registered, and a 4473 has never been processed on it, and won't be until you sell it to someone.
Stormtroopers can't confiscate what they don't know about
Even as a handgun, there is no requirement to register it prior to sale. The only potential problem is if you use it in a crime (or are accused of a crime), use of an unregistered handgun will bump a misdemeanor to a felony.

Looks like the party is planned for September.
Paperweights typically go for anywhere from $90 to $200 for the AR15.
AR10 (.308) tend to go for about $100 more.

Don't know if anyone at the party will have an AR10 jig though.

So, when? I have 2 80% lowers that aren't very useful to me until they're finished. Might actually have 3 of them in a couple of months.

Thanks, I am just doing my part in trying to get some AR pistols in CA...

Why pay $300-500 for a friggin AR pistol lower when.... we have the collective power of calguns to finish these?

Heck you can do it on a drill press but that would take about 3hrs per paperwt but it can be done!

Let me know the date for this, I will more than likely be there even if it is the previous or following weekend of Greg's party too.
