At build parties.
People pointed me in the right direction, but I did all the work.
I have mad metalworking skillz though.

Well if I had hands on help I would of definitely done it different, but I was all alone in my garage trying to build one and couldnt wait for a build party, I hate waiting thats why I dont buy many guns.
This seemed perfect and had it built 1 week after waiting for all the parts. I did get plenty of help from here online.
When I get more money saved up im buying another kit and will wait to have help in bending a flat and riveting the receiver. I may just buy a flat to have on hand so if a party comes up at least I can bend it and hopefully weld the rails.

IIRC there was a company that made sideplates for the 1919, then the ATF ruled that it was past 80%, went and found all the people that the sideplates were sold to and took sideplates with parts kits attached.

Not quite.

The entire inventory was locked down by the ATF, but so far they haven't been confiscating private guns built on those 80% plates. The ATF did however, do what they wanted to... They killed the manufacturing market of unfinished receivers for homebuilt guns. Every commercial company stopped selling 80% plates.

Heres what I dont understand, you can send a cut up receiver to a guy, he welds in plates to remake that cut up receiver and grinds it all down and you cant tell where it was welded up at, looks just like the receiver brand new. Charges around $300 to do it, now to me your not making that yourself at all, someone else is welding it up and the holes are already there from before. Now I think that would be considered illegal but I really dont know much. Would it be illegal if you weren't the one doing the work?

That sounds iffy. He's not exactly "manufacturing" a receiver, if he's only repairing it, right?

That must be one of the "loopholes" we hear about so often.

Stupid question for those bending your own receivers: do you harden the steel after bending, or is that generally not done? I'm gathering it's the latter.

from every website on building ak's ive only seen the trigger pin holes get heat treated. there was one where a guy had a kiln and did the whole receiver but I would only do the trigger pin holes, dont know exactly why but thats whats done
