Help! Failed Detent Mod

and btw i think the point was that the tap is too small for the ez-out method to work. which is pretty much true.
the OP has a hss or harder tap that is quite small, stuck in soft metal (aluminum).
it would be VERY difficult to drill a hole into the tap w/o wandering into the surrounding material, and then even if you succeeded you'd have to use a very fine ez-out, if they even exist (i dunno).
a guy that botched the tapping job in the first place is not likely to be able to pull such an operation off.

points all very well taken -I believe you are correct. It he could tap right, he probably could drill a hole right. You'd need the right set up to drill

Anyways I tried a few of your suggestions about trying to punch the tap into pieces and that ended up being a no go as well. Fortunately my KNS pin came in the mail to put an end to this fiasco. Thanks to all who gave help.

cool that you were able to come up with a solution. If it ever bugs you, look into one of those EDM bolt/tap removal services. It looks like they can burn out even smaller stuff than that tap of yours. There's got to be one down San Diego way.

I would suggest as was posted earlier take it to a reputable machine shop that does EDM and have them zap it out.

I am guessing that most who have broke off the tap (with the exception of the OP) that the users were ham-fisted and forced the tap, didn't use tapping oil and didn't back the tap out every once in a while to ensure the cuttings were clear.

That happened to me a couple of months ago. I tried the tap extractor from marshalls but it barely budged. I ended up taking to Slivnik machining in San Marcos, (North Country San Diego). They specialize in tap removals.

They charged me $80

Ouch! $80 for a $7.95 mod Not trying to hurt your feelings, but ouch! At least the end plate covers up any trace of it going wrong, right? Sorry to hear about everyones mis-haps trying to do the mod. I wanted to try it but decided that I do not take off that section of my AR's often enough to consider it.

thing is, how often are you going to take off your butt stock?
its a neat idea and all but to me its just more $ wasted.

It's definitely not a MOD you must do or the lower would already come tapped. I did it on my two new lowers without a problem, but i didn't buy one of those kits. I almost lost and broke my spring a few times so i decided to try this MOD for the hell of it, but i wouldn't suggest it for someone building their first lower as necessary.

Glad to see the issue was resolved though. Everyone one makes mistakes, sometimes due to impatience or sometimes it's just murphys law..

If you dont need to remove the pins anytime soon, you could insert the spring and the detent from the pin side through the 1/4" hole, that way its practically doing the same thing as the screw would have done. When you do need to remove it, just stick the dremel in there and cut the end of the pins slot.

Breaking the tap with a punch is the answer.
Then you pick out the pieces.

Make sure to use the proper secure the receiver, and use the correct size punch. Good luck!
