Help! Failed Detent Mod

New shooters are commonly mislead to believe that tapping the reciever for a setscrew is somehow a good idea.

I'm pretty new to building OLL's but I've broken off a fair number of screws/bolts/taps in tight places . . .

I'd start with the lower in a vice and try tapping it (the tap) in a counter-clockwise direction with a fine punch. If that didn't work I'd carefully grind the top flat or flat with the surface of the receiver using a dremel or similar small grinder (I have access to diamond dental bits but similar bits are available at your local hardware store) then grind out or grind a hole that would accept a small easy out.

Should be fine as long as the tap doesn't gouge out any aluminum and end up futher down the hole.

Even if it does, there's a 1/4" diameter hole at the end of the detent hole.
Drive the broken pieces of tap right out the bottom of the detent hole and into the takedown pin hole.

Yep, and you probably wouldn't even need to drive it all the way through, once you bang on it a bit, the tap will likely fall out out the same way in went in after the cut threads are destroyed.

Not sure why he needs the mod? But the most important thing is to know how to use a tap.

I have 100% success welding a small nut to the top of the tap through the hole in the nut. Many other ideas posted here may or may not work. Good luck.

On vises, I have a ruger MkII upper that is a very tight fit on the lower. I decided to take it down completely to set up the overtravel screw on the trigger (KMK678GC model). I didn't feel like going downstairs and out to the garage for getting a mallet and figured I would muscle it off.

I did, and when it popped off the rear of the frame that cups the upper sliced right through the fleshy base of my thumb, a good half centimeter deep - off to the ER for stitches I went.

Now I use vises when appropriate and walk to the garage

Just one more thing you might try, get a pair of small Pilers Like a jeweler uses, or Micro Pilers sold in kits at sears, then heat up the area with a hot air gun, (no Flame) once the metal is hot enough you should be able to walk it back out with little proplem, just take your time, maybe even take a few minutes to set back and pounder what u are doing it will come out.

could he just leave it in and install the detent/spring from the front? I've only built 1 so far so forgive the lack of recollection, and since nobody mentioned it I asume it's not possible......
