    Why Change the Default?

I think it is interesting that FS encourages students to be able to holster without looking at the holster. I LOOK every time. Some Line coach or range master always tells me I should be able to do it by feel. I always respond the same: "Sure. But why would I do it that way?" My argument is that the only time I put the gun back in the holster is when I am pretty sure the fight is completely over. So, there should be no issue at all taking my eyes off the "battle field" and now putting them on the most dangerous part: Re-holstering.

Usually, after my diatribe, they just let me look each time...

This. I die a little inside everytime I see someone holstering quickly, especially if their skill level isn't up there.

Though... I can see how if you were doing a rifle-pistol-rifle transition, in the heat of battle, then urgency would be warranted.

Totally agree. I shoot about 8k rounds a year as a USPSA shooter. I dry fire about half that much. I look at the holster every time I put the gun in it, loaded or un-loaded. My finger is nowhere near the trigger. It is normally straight hovering next to the slide. If I ever have to use it in a gun fight, it is staying out until the LEO come and I set it on the ground by my feet. The most dangerous thing you do in a FS class is holster your gun under your concealment. There is NO reason to ever do it fast, and no reason to not look if you want. It's not cool or tactical to holster without looking, no matter who says it is. Finally, I can recall a few FS instructors using the phrase, "safely, slowly, back into the holster".

Remember, your coach behind you is supposed to be watching/coaching you and making sure your safe, at FS.

Several, years ago, my wife and I took the empty hand and edged weapons classed at night over July 4. The classes were held in the air conditioned big white tent that we all pass as we drive in. Great instructors and a lot of fun. Class held as many women and young girls as men and young boys. Very family orientated. Training is geared for all ages. If I am not mistaken, the classes ran from 6 pm until 1 am. Fire works on the 4th of July were a blast.

Fourth of July festivities at FS

So we find ourselves in the greater Las Vegas area in the week of July 4. We have the empty hand and bladed weapons classes up there starting on July 6.

Question for you guys who have been to the Fourth of July festivities: Is it worth it for us to drive up to Front Sight the evening of July 4 not to take classes but to take part of the festivities? We were planning to just hang out in town until the night before class.

I did it solo. I did half day empty hand and half day edged weapons. It was nice to work with the instructor one-on-one. The instructor I had was the one who wrote the curriculum. I got to go hands on with somebody who knows what he's doing and got instant feedback. The instructor was a durable and experienced guy so I could practice techniques at a realistic speed (he wasn't going to get hurt.) I had no prior training so I've no idea what works and what doesn't and can't critique his knowledge or skill. I learned some good techniques. One nice thing about doing it in a private class is that the pace is faster. There is no waiting on others.

In hindsight, a full day of each would have been better for acquiring more knowledge.

Maybe, around 1030 pm, a motivational talk, Dr P update, then fireworks at midnight. If you make the drive for about 2 hrs program, then give it a try.

2 day practical rifle 3/20-3/21. Anyone else going? Moving to Vegas has been great for my FS visits.
