Once you get up to speed its completely doable to check for a mag and still make time.
3. The type three malfunction clearance does not require checking for a spare magazine on the belt. This one threw me a bit as I'm so used to checking.
4. I found the 50 yd controlled pair, the ambi drill and the hostage taker headshots to be the most challenging part of the HCMP test. These will be my focus for the next six months.
The pair at the 50 gets easy pretty quick once you start practicing for it, yet at the same time if I'm going to drop a shot out of the thoracic during the 'schoolhouse drills' its usually at the 50.
The hostage taker shots are what tend to destroy people the most for a few reasons. 1) The times are really short. 2) its absolutely imperative that you complete the shot before the target begins to turn (this is true of all shots where you aren't shooting at the center of the target. 3) Pretend the hostage isn't even there...aka 'shoot to hit' not 'be sure not to hit'
Ambi drill is a killer. I'm so bad at it that I actually plan on not getting the last shot off. Its a super rare occurrence that I don't get -4 or -5 on it.
Most seem to have consistent difficulty with the responses as well. If you feel good there, you're ahead of the game!
Good Luck to you!Comment

Thanks, I had the course of fire, I was just looking for anything more formal regarding procedures.Comment

Its really pretty simple. Mostly it formalizes all the things you cannot do to your gear. Things like no extended or weighted base-pads on magazines. Generally speaking it follows the 'any gun will do if you will do' mantra. A bone stock Glock 19 is 100% capable of being used to pass the test.
It also covers things which you are required to do with your gear. For example, magazines must cross or be behind your center-line.
It also discusses the formalities of where you must be positioned at the completion of some drills - in particular multi-target and the ambi-drill. The basic gist is that you must be in-line with the last target you shoot. For responses you must respond with your gun away from the target.
Generally speaking anything you could do to your gear that would make the test easier isn't allowed. The only thing that I can think of which is universally allowed are modifications to sights. Its extremely rare not see someone serious about the test that doesn't have a more narrow then stock front sight.Comment

[QUOTE=NorthBay Shooter;22987158]Time for Emergency Reload on Malfunctions is 1.8 Seconds (not 1.9).....Comment

I agree, my personal sheet shows 1.8 as well. Frankly, anyone with drop free double-stack magazines is doing it in less than 1.2. Since you know its coming its basically the same thing as a Type 2 malfunction.
The hilarious one is the tac-reload. Most people could do it twice in 3.5 seconds.Comment

Are these times from concealment? The doc is copyrighted, but they will give you a copy when you attend the course. The course of fire is available in this thread somewhere...
Here's a post with the course of fire:
For the Close Contact, the first one - what is the start position? From the holster?
Looking at this test - though I have shot longer ranges with a pistol, I am quite wary of the pairs to both 25-yards and 50-yards within the par time... Wow!!!
Not only that - the length of the test, the reps, etc. can potentially make it more mental than physical... Hhhmmmm...
I will believe so!
Albeit, ....
Yeah, with the fat stock sights - 15+ yards becomes a challenge! The only thing that I can think of which is universally allowed are modifications to sights. Its extremely rare not see someone serious about the test that doesn't have a more narrow then stock front sight.
I wonder what sights were used by those that have passed the HCM test.
I would agree. 1.8 or even a 1.9 for an emergency reload is TOO long. Ideally should be able to do a slide lock to reload to a 7 (10?)-yards hit in less than 1.5 (and this is being generous already).

No concealment.
All drills are from semi-relaxed position, hands at sides, gun holstered. You are allowed to turn your head (but nothing else) on the 'line is set' cadence. Feet can be pretty much anywhere safe...most common is slightly spread facing the target or a very shallow blade.
For the Close Contact, the first one - what is the start position? From the holster?
The close contact and palm-strike step back begin at essentially arms length from the target. It's often called out as 'toes to the ties and a half-step back'
The frills simply require lots of practice with extreme economy of movement. If you watch the people who have passed the test repeatedly you see no wasted motion. The biggest help for my presentation is to come up high out of the holster before I begin my rotation to the target. Once rotated punch out as flat as possible to the dominant eye. Trigger slack is 100% taken up by the instant of sight picture leaving a few hundredths for any tweaking while breaking the trigger.

There's no doubt that for many its 99% a mental game. I know a few shooters that are more then capable of passing the test physically and have done so many times in practice...yet haven't passed it officially. Running the drills for official testing easily adds -20 to my practice test results.
Not only that - the length of the test, the reps, etc. can potentially make it more mental than physical... Hhhmmmm...
There's also the natural eb and flow of shooting skill. Sometimes you can feel that the skill level simply isn't there that day and you need to walk away from it rather then to try to shoot your way out of it. Basically if I find myself trying to shoot better I actually end up shooting worse.
My feel is that blacked-out serrated rears with fiber fronts is the general preference; but I honestly haven't paid that much attention as I rarely ever see the muzzle end of anyone else's gun!
I will believe so!

The reality is the test is crazy hard to pass ... I'll take easy anywhere I can get it. The other aspect that's easy to forget is that all of the malfunctions and reloads are all performed 5 times each. Even with extensive practice its easy to bobble a couple tenths.

I've proven to myself many times I'm capable of passing...but it hasn't yet. Hopefully eventually...Last edited by mej16489; 05-10-2019, 4:28 PM.Comment

Doing five iterations of each malfunction in HCM time is one thing when you are doing it dry at home, or even on the range for practice
VERSUS
doing it when you have shot between 36-40 points down on the HCM test - and now have to clean all 25 malfunctions in order to Pass the test!

I logged into my front sight account and noticed that my 1 day 1+1 private training certificate was canceled. It was part of one of the offers I went for a month ago, now it just says "Offer 139 fulfillment error correction" I'm kinda bummed, was looking forward to trying the private training...
We're out there this week, kids are in the kids achievement class and having a lot of fun!Comment
