Best standard muff I have found are the Peltor "Shotgunner". They fold up, are lightweight and comfortable AND have a dish-out to allow for proper cheek-weld on rifles and shotguns. Only muffs I can wear all day with no discomfort :-)

If shooting very loud guns (rifles with muzzle brakes, magnum pistols and at indoor ranges) foam plugs under standard muffs are always advised anyway.

Edited to add: Plugging under muffs is always a good idea for action competition as muffs can fall off while you are running a stage

foam plugs with string i hijack from a some metal working place -32db... also use bulk pack foam plugs from homedepot no string -32db...
foam plugs work just fine however obviously they quiet everything so conversation sucks.. a lot of guys i shoot with rock foam plugs with electronics over them so they can hear normal stuff..
Boy the way Glen Miller played, songs that made the hit parade, guys like us we had it made, those were the days, and you know where you were then, girls were girls and men were men, mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again, didn't need no welfare states everybody pulled his weight, gee our old Lasalle ran great, those were the days!

Peltor Tac 6, they are very cheap around $60, and I use them for 3 Gun. Get the over the neck band ones, easier to use with the shotgun and rifle. If you want the best, Sordins at about $300.The real reason to use electronic ears is not that they muffle the sound better, it's so you can hear your buddies talking sh*t about you.... and hear range commands, and on occasion, some idiot cranking a gun behind the line!

Can anyone comment on the most comfortable electronic hearing protection? Usually after a couple of hours during a match or training class, my temples hurt where my eye and ear protection meet up (right in front of my ears). I'm currently using the Howard Leights and have used the Caldwell E-Max as well - both hurt after some time.

What works well for those of you who have big heads?

Peltor Tac 6, hands down the most comfortable AND affordable electronic ones I have tried.

I love these things. They fit my ear great and when I don't need them they are around my neck until I do.

I recently switched to the Surefire Sonic Defender EP4 and it's very comfortable and works well for me. There's an extra hole that you can close up too on them if the noise is still too loud for you.

Not particularly affordable... but MSA Sordin Supremes are incredibly comfortable (especially with the gel ear cups) and the electronics are top notch.

hearing loss is permanent. A $300 pair of muffs is cheap by comparison.

I have MSA sordins, as well as Peltor Tac7s. Both are very comfortable, I double plug for either at indoor ranges, outdoors, the muff by itself is generally fine unless youre standing next to a guy with a compensated 38 super open gun.

                            +1.
Maybe it's model-specific, but I stopped using other brands with higher ratings, because they don't provide full protection when you turn your head/crane your neck.
                            Here's their NRR30 model.

I only use passive muffs on the public range. During a match, you need to hear the SO's every word clearly for safety reasons. MSA Sordin with gel earcups is the way to go for all day comfort. I double up with NRR29+ ear plugs as well.
