You made me snort!!
If you paid less than 85% full price, you are ahead of the game. You could fill the cavity with hot glue or just shoot em single shot while developing a load. I'll tell you want not to do with them:
Don't try shooting any denim-wearing deer with them. The hollow point will fill up with the denim and the bullet will pass through without expanding!

I spoke too soon on the 150gr 30-30. I was in a rush yesterday. There are 2 sets of lines that run the length of the bullet. This is the best I could get my phone camera to focus. The depth is much less than rifling would impart on the bullet.

Ya, whats the worst that could happen, a chain fire in the magazine tube?
That's more than a "blem" to me. That's deceit, and Midsouth should make it right. A "blem" is usually something like a slight flaw in the jacket, etc. JMHO.sigpic

I've been buying blems and over-runs from Midsouth for years, and they've always been in good condition. This is the first time I've heard of a major, distinguishable defect being evident.
In any case, they were $75/500, so even if I have to cull 10% I won't grouse too bad about it.
But - you're right.... Midsouth shouldn't be selling outright defective stuff like that, and they should have inspected beforehand and at least posted a note about the missing tips being expected on some.
Anything missing a tip will be shot on a single round loaded basis, not stacked in the tube.Last edited by bigbossman; 05-09-2014, 9:25 AM.Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

Never load any pointed projectile in a tube fed rifle wheter it has a rubber tip or not. High chance of multiple cartridge igniton. blown up gun and mybe no hand left and part of forearm. Used round or flat nose projectiles.Comment

The bullets in question are designed by Hornady expressly for lever action tube fed rifles, so in this case it is not an issue.Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

just load them up as the first and last round into the tube. the first one in the tube wont have a primer in front of it to punch and the last one will be the first one loaded into firing position
my order showed up today and it looks like mine are wearing their rubbers and are ready for some action.NRA Life MemberComment

i ordered some of these too and they have the same marks or at least some of them doNRA Life MemberComment

But the last one will have more spring tension on it and pressing the hardest into the primer ahead of itjust load them up as the first and last round into the tube. the first one in the tube wont have a primer in front of it to punch and the last one will be the first one loaded into firing position

Hornady does market an FTX (flexible rubber tip) for tube fed guns. But the tipped bullets from Midsouth I received have a hard plastic/polymer tip that is not very flexible.Comment

The tips I recieved are definitely flexible enough to not worry. They are also advertised by midsouth "lever gun"Comment

no sir, the last one loaded into the tube will be the first one that slides into the chamber to be fired. it wont even be near another round when the rifle is fired so how would it press into the primer ahead of it. that would be a neat trickNRA Life MemberComment

Maybe hes afraid of carrying it unchambered and dropping it... but if your out in the woods hunting, it should be chambered already.Comment

So I emailed midsouth today, making them aware of my issue, sending pictures and whatnot. I recieved a email back a few hours later, from the guy who told me they are blems as is ect from over the phone the previous day.
He mentioned he was sorry and that didnt realize they were actually unusable and unsafe for their intended purpose. Told me to count the pieces that are no good, and theyll compensate me... seems like I may get a couple bucks back. Ohhh yeah, time to visit the dollar menu at McDonald's! ;-)
Seems midsouth is doing their part for customer service. I was a little disappointed from the phone call. But its turning around nowComment

This was based on my Marlin that holds 6 in the tube but it takes a lot of force to get that 6th round in the tube. Maybe that would not be enough to set off the primer of the 5th round in the tube. I would rather not find out the hard way by shoving a pointed tip round in there.Comment
