First time newbie reloader range test for 9mm

I'm new to reloading, after much research into data and getting my press all set up, got down to buisness and loaded up 60 rnds. Here is the details...

    Powder... CFE pistol, 30 rnds @ 5.3 grns then 30 rnds @ 5.5 grns
Bullets... Xtreme 115 grn copper plated RN
    Brass... range pickup
    Primers... CCI 500 sp
    Oal... 1.130 +/- .002
    light taper crimp... .375 +/- .002

I shoot a Glock 26, My partner in this endevor shoots a S&W MP 9mm. We shot 15 0f each charge at 7 ydrs from a bench rest. The higher charge performed better in my Glock. We both shot decent groups, best was 2" group of 5 rnds, worst was 4" group of 5 rnds with a couple of flyers. We are not marksmen by any means but We was both happy... no failures of any kind. I know CFE pistol is new to market but everything went good and we both are addicted...

Are the brass dirty after you shoot and did you do load other load workups or just the 2 charge weights? Any chance you can do chrono of your loads?

And the addiction only gets worse. I have been reloading for 55+ years and I am always tinkering with the system.

Congrats on your 9MM working well, there are easier cartridges to load for. When I started loading the 9MM my first light loads were not consistent in cycling my M&P and I had to increase the powder .2 gr.

Good stuff man. Congrats! I'm in the same boat. I'll be testing my very first reloads of .223 and 9mm tomorrow.

I have also found the 5.5gr load to be most accurate, but with 124gr Berrys FMJ HB @ 1.150".

Yes, some brass was a little dirty, I noticed this same thing with a bunch of Sellier&Bellot brass I have had layin around for along time. We only did workups for the 2 charges for CFE pistol. As far as chrono, not at this time.

I think the S&B 9mm ammo I have is milsurp, I've been saving that brass for awhile now and we started out with S&B brass but it would not accept CCI primers. My Lymans manuel made no mention of this issue that I can recall, but the Speer Reloading Manuel I was looking at at LGS did mention this about milsurp ammo. I got alot of once fired S&B brass that I dont know what to do with...

If the brass is milsurp then it's likely crimped, which explains why the primers wouldn't fit. The primer pockets will need to be swaged, which i think is a major pain but you only need to do it once to each case.

It looks like there might be a wider spectrum of charge weights available with that powder combo. That might help tighten up the groups. Good luck!

I have only been reloading for 32+ years.

My bother and I are both lawmen so we got 38 Special and 9mm die sets back then. So 9mm has always been a easy round to load for me. Plus I had a Browning High Power and it did exceptional with 125 grain LRN.
