The fundamental fallacy in this entire thread is that the 223 caliber is suitable for hunting anything larger than a gopher.

I can see bringing your 223 carbine on a backpack trip, since you can blast rabbits and squirrels in half with it, and have fresh meat for your cooking pot.

But for big game, you should really get educated regarding the 308 and it's necked-down cousin the 243 as the minimum.

I understand you're not going to buy another ,I was commenting on .30/30 cartridge itself. 600yrd .223? ,why don't you just load your 7mm down? After all that's the idea of rolling your own. You can tailor your loads to any given sitch.

I would never even attempt to take game with a 223 at 600 yds. I was saying my 7mag has to be able to do that for the antlered season as many of the shots are distant. The 223 was only going to be used for shots whithin 100yds. I appreciate everyone's opinions and advise thanks so much!

I would respectfully submit bullet and cartridge selection, while important, is not as important as bullet placement when hunting large animals, both for humane kill and meat destruction reasons. When I can I try to put the bullet through both lungs, the ideal being a broadside shot with a hold behind the shoulder five inches or so and low enough not to hit the spine. Even one of the whiz-bang magnums will go through the ribs and lungs without excess destruction. Head and neck shots are good too, but I find them a little tougher to make as a practical matter. Hit the critter in the hams, the spine, or the shoulders and you wasted meat, 30-30 or magnum. And if you are willing to "Texas heart shot" a buck running away from you, enjoy your gutting experience and spicy venison!! My living room and basis for opinion:
