Sorry for the newb question, but wouldn't I want to use a bonded bullet if I "were" to use this platform(i.e. .223/5.56)

Full disclosure: planning on using my 336 with hornady's 160gr ftx
    Or
1917 Enfield with 180gr core lokt if there's a big one!

Bonded bullets are meant to expand but hold together more when penetrating deeply in larger animals.

The 223/5.56 is not a high velocity round with heavier bullets and usually not used on bigger animals. I would use a monometal bullet for better penetration or a heavy for caliber, lead bullet but not necessarily bonded unless they happen to shoot better in my gun.

I'm leaning the Barnes way. But I'm open to opinions.
I've always been told minimum meat damage comes via the largest diameter bullet moving slow. How often do you read a gunrag saying a 30-30 was a DRT with the hunting partner's 30-06 needing to track down their poor deer and dealing with bloodshot meat etc?

If you insist on 7mm rem mag, I suggest you look for the heaviest bullets you can find of relatively weak construction and slow them down.

If you are intending to go the opposite way and reducing bullet diameter .04" and gonna shoot them at warp speed to compensate, well, good luck to you. Hope the .04 reduction (pre expansion) is enough to mitigate your meat damage issues.

This has been my experience in the field, with pigs.

.243 with 100gr bullet moving fast = lots of jellied meat. .303 Brit with 180gr bullet going about 2100fps = small hole in, expansion and exit hole about the size of quarter/half dollar with almost no lost meat.

                Use an arrow.
At less than 100 YRDS, shoot at the head or neck for no meat loss, with what ever high cal u got.
.223 is just not ethical, but that is on you.

The main thing about the 7mag is the fragmenting. I was taking pieces of lead out of the hind quarters when I shot the front shoulder. So I will be going with the Barnes bullet I'm just concerned about the length they are quite long. And the reason I don't just load up some 175 gr bullets for it are because I have to be able to make 3-600 yd shots on the bucks for the general season. So I need a flatter shooting bullet.

And this Barnes bullet is a little slower but supposed to be super flat and has a high BC.

With any 7mm the twist and barel lenght are very important.

.284 bullets are finicky but once you find the right loads for your gun very consistent.

                        Good shooting!

Yeah it shot the 140gr noslers hunting ballistic tip very well. It would shoot less than a inch at 200 yds. With 65.5 gr of RL 19. That was a little fast so I took it down a little but it still shot very well. I might have to try noslers partitions.

                              What bullet?

I've had good success with Partitions in .264 Win Mag and 25-06.

I have come across kids in the forests hunting deer with AR-15's and AK's and M-14's.

The M-14 is a 308 and works just fine on deer. It hits lighter than a 270 or 30-06 and about the same as a 243.

The AR-15's and AK's are too light for deer however. He'll get away, and you'll try tracking him forever, and you'll wish you had a 243 or 308 instead.

So maybe you should think about getting an AR-10 instead.
