45acp issues or chronograph issues please advice.

hope this is the right place to post but i had a question on a chronograph. So today I went out and tried my new chronie and I was getting good readings with the 308,223,9 and 22lr. Well when I went to check my 45acp i was getting reading from 1800-2600fps. I did get one that was reading 2890fps. The 45acp was loaded with 6grn of Unique and seated to 1.25" on a 230grn RN. Is my chronograph broken or is my 45 acp loaded super hot? Cant tell what the issue is please help.

Pretty sure your gun would blow up at those velocities. Must have been a chrono issue.

If you're shooting pistol and no flame out of the muzzle, chrono issues.

What was the distance from muzzle to chrony? If everything else was ok, man, I don't know. And the 9mm was showing normal? Hmmm.

Were you set up in the same spot? Light changes can affect readings a lot.

Was set up at the same spot. Distance was about 4ft from the muzzle. 9mm was shooting good around 1000-1200fps similar to federal loads. I guess I'll need to try it out some more.

                4 ft is pretty close

DAMN! I am gonna load some of that now. I wanna see how fast I can get my .45...

In all honesty though, what was the light and conditions like? Were you using a sun screen? Time of day? Wait don't tell me, was the sun starting to go down?

If you were shooting the .45 acp while the sun was starting to go down, THAT was your problem.

Next time, take your 9 or whatever else you have and once you are getting good readins, switch to the .45 acp. Then if the readings are all over the place, switch back to the other pistol or rifle that was shooting good readings. Also, it COULD help to color your chrono loads black or something dark so the sensors pick them up easier. How far away from the chrono were you and what brand was this?

Stilly this was done this afternoon at BLM in perris. Lighting was sunny no clouds, using sun screens. It could have been that I am to close to the chrono. Just wierd that it was doing this with only the 45. Not even the 308 was this off. Oh and the model of the chrono is an chrony F1. I'll have to test it out again next weekend.

Chrono problems......If 2890 FPS were true we would reading your obituary instead of your thread here!!

I know this can be a problem, but I chrono with a friend who also has a chrono. We test our loads & chrono at the same time. We chrono at 10 feet to the first screen. This way we have a base line for consistency. We shoot USPSA so chrono is very important to us.

Some folks shoot through both chronos at the same time, but we put ours side by side to test our loads. This has paid off for my friend. He had to send his chrono in for a replacement.

Yeah I was scared when I read the first shoot but thought it was a fluke. Then I did it again and got similar results. So I switched to the other calibers and they were reading fine. As a caution I stopped shooting the 45 till I figured things out. Still I learned a lot from using the chrono today. Had fun either way.

Sounds like a chrono issue... probably setup related as 4 feet is really close.
