Before I start shooting with a group I make a very clear indication that I keep my brass. As far as people starting to pick up my brass, I just tell them to make me a neat pile close to me and thank them for caring about the environment.

In cases like these, this is where one of those brass stripers is very useful.. You can prove what is yours by the markings on it.. if they have it, you can speak up and tell them that you want your marked brass and would they be so kind as to hand it over..

Need to be a bit more aggressive when it comes to taking back what is yours.. and if the whole brass thing is a big deal, maybe you need to shoot firearms that don't spew brass all over hell's half acre.. or put down a tarp to better focus the brass coming out of your guns..

Personally I always wait for people to leave before scarfing up whatever they left.. but I'm courteous that way..

I am the only reloader of my friends too. They were scavenging in HOPES to start reloading... That's what made got me.. I could understand maybe hot a caliber or 2 to have hopes to reload those first I understand that but to scavenge all calibers? I'm sure 50% of that brass will be sold, thrown away or lost again being 70+ years of age. That's quite a small window to pick up reloading 8 different calibers let alone start at all.

              Greedy.
But then again, I hoarded brass of all kinds for about three years before I started reloading, so I'm somewhat guilty as well...

                Step 1: Grow a Pair
                Step 2: Be Man
Step 3: Talk with authority towards other human beings.
Step 4: Handle the Consequences like a man, whatever they be.
                Step 5: ????
                Step 6: Profit

Maybe I just grew up different than the "men" here. I did wrong to my neighbor I got chased and hit with a shovel and then spanked by my parents afterwards. If someone did something you didn't like you spoke up about it, and if needs be traded blows over it. Some of my lifetime best friendships began where we introduced ourselves via our fists.

If you want to be a door mat, then so be it. But friend or not, men stand up and speak their peace, whatever it might be. You don't have to be an *** about it but simply and peaceably lay down the facts and let the fallout happen as it may.

People are not friends if they steal from you or abuse you. If they do so, then it is no loss to cut them loose.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

I suggest next time you take a minute to calm down, gather your thoughts, and then respectfully go hash out your issues with the person that offended you. Maybe they're a little dense and didn't realize the etiquette of only taking the brass that you brought/shot. Maybe they just heard "pick up the brass so that it can be reloaded" and figured "hey, that sounds like a good idea, let's keep it!"

Either way, there's a saying about an ounce of prevention, and blah blah blah. When I go shooting with new people, I explain to them that everybody must pick up their brass and shells so that we don't litter. I then explain to them that they are worth money to reloaders, and so whoever bought the ammo gets to keep the brass/shells. If someone bought ammo but doesn't reload, I tell them they can keep it, try and sell it, or I'd be glad to take it off their hands. I've never had a problem with people when I explain that stuff in advance. Heck, we usually hire the kids that come along to pick up the brass and shells for $1 per50 or 100 that they collect. That way I don't have to find the brass, and the kids have fun finding it.
                    This. Nicely said.

Where you really went wrong, (besides letting them take the brass) is you could have introduced a couple new people to reloading.

"Hey Guys!, I see you picked up all of MY brass by accident. Tell you what, sort it out so I can reload mine & I'll teach you how to reload the caliber you shoot, so you can see if it is something YOU want to get involved with. How's that sound?" WIN/WIN
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

I pick up all my shells as soon as I finish shooting the mag. I have never had someone take my brass that I know of but I have seen people run to other stalls as soon as they see a person start pack up and start picking up their brass.
