    Reloader rant

Quick little rant. How many of you can share a similar story?

On my desert trip last weekend I went out with my father, a few of his/our work friends, his friends father and some of their church friends.

Anyways I brought almost all my guns you can see the calibers in my sig. and the other guys had mostly 22's, 308's, ARs and a few 12 gauge shotguns. My cousin who couldn't go who reloads 12g said, hey bring back all your hulls and some extra if you can. I said yea sure no problem, I reload so obviously Ill bring mine and ill get some hulls for you.

So were shooting for a few hours and it's starting to calm down and I make a call to save me all the brass I reload so I need mine. I start picking up a few cases I just fired and put them in the truck. I go load up another mag for me and one for my father. I turn around, load the mag and click off safety and am about to shoot when I see one of the guys start picking up all the brass in my area.... Ok that's fine they can keep their brass some of his were in my area so it was fine. Assuming he would just leave mine being I literally just called out that I need my/extra brass. So I'm just about to shoot and he is picking up brass right in front of me about to shoot. Ok I'll wait....

Long story short/ the trip is closing up and I start looking for mine and extra brass. The SOB scavenged 90% of the brass we ALL shot. So I'm like ok fu**er and look for what ever is left. Then I hear them talking at their truck about "yea hopefully SOON WE WILL START RELOADING"...... Your telling me you just snagged the brass I called for, that I want/need to RELOAD because I already reload, because you PLAN on reloading in a few years.... Are you kidding me?!?!

He picked up at least 5k rounds of brass/hulls and about 2k were mine alone. I was so pissed. He literally didn't bother until I called out hey save me my brass and yours if you don't want it.. He bolted to make sure he got all of it including some of mine. This guy is maybe all of 70 years old or older and PLANS on reloading. Not to offend the older reloaders here but come on if you don't reload by then, your times a bit limited now let alone when a actual reloader is there and could use it right then and kindly asked for the spend lot and to obviously leave his for him self.

I don't know it really got me that someone would literally snake brass from a reloader who doesn't even reload and be that selfish. Let alone go in front and under my muzzle to do so... And me come back almost empty handed for my cousin and his wanted hulls after he gave me a box of 12g I could shoot so I could bring him shells...

Has anyone else had something like that happen before? Sorry I just needed to vent this and hopefully get some reassurance I'm not an idiot for being kinda ticked at this.

    /rant, thanks for listening

    It happens everywhere.

I was out patterning my shotgun a while ago with some Winchester AA's; obviously looking to save my hulls. Some dude from a couple stalls down comes over and takes them. I just looked at him like "are you serious?"

I just don't know why people don't ask before picking up someone else's brass and hulls.

You should have said something at the time. They are your friends/family, right? Now you're just stewing in your own juices.

I get where you're coming from. But did it ever occur to you to handle the situation like a man and talk about it? You said that you were mad about the situation at the time, but let it slide and then came here to give us a passive-aggressive rant?

I suggest next time you take a minute to calm down, gather your thoughts, and then respectfully go hash out your issues with the person that offended you. Maybe they're a little dense and didn't realize the etiquette of only taking the brass that you brought/shot. Maybe they just heard "pick up the brass so that it can be reloaded" and figured "hey, that sounds like a good idea, let's keep it!"

Either way, there's a saying about an ounce of prevention, and blah blah blah. When I go shooting with new people, I explain to them that everybody must pick up their brass and shells so that we don't litter. I then explain to them that they are worth money to reloaders, and so whoever bought the ammo gets to keep the brass/shells. If someone bought ammo but doesn't reload, I tell them they can keep it, try and sell it, or I'd be glad to take it off their hands. I've never had a problem with people when I explain that stuff in advance. Heck, we usually hire the kids that come along to pick up the brass and shells for $1 per50 or 100 that they collect. That way I don't have to find the brass, and the kids have fun finding it.

I go shooting all the time with a bunch of reloaders. Had one dude snake most of my .45 brass. I was pretty pissed because that's what I'm lowest on.

I learned long ago, that if I'm shooting with a bunch of reloaders, I shoot 22 or steel that day. Or 9mm I have way too much of that..

But yeah, that would piss me off too

This is where you say, "Hey, by the way, guys, I'm saving my hulls. I'm shooting the red Winchester shells " or whatever.

This was only the 2nd time I've met this guys father. He's kind of one of those older retired guys that thinks all younger kids are idiots and is kind of a grump. Honestly the whole time I thought he was picking them up for me or going to split it with the group and be a nice guy but after seeing no brass expecting him to offer I heard their "I plan on reloading" story I was like oh what a di** he's keeping it all... Then they packed up and went.

I figured it wasn't worth the awkward confrontation and to just let it blow over but every time in look at the little bit I did get I just get mad again haha

Worst part was the guy only brough and shoots 12g and 308.... But he took 5.56,45,44,357,308,12g 20g and 9. Literally all of it. And it's not like I'd actually take it back from him just "what a di**" moment.

                I feel your pain...

I try to be conscientious of this when I'm out on the range. I constantly see people as they walk behind my stall, pick up my brass that flung behind me and then scurry along. Because of this, I now use a "brass catcher" which works VERY WELL might I add.

It is amazing when you simply ask people if they mind if I pick up their brass and if they say no, then tell them OK, cool and move along. If they say go ahead, then yea, why not. The point is, ask, don't ASSume, and be polite. That goes a long way.

With regards to your story, I don't know what to say but maybe next time, use steel cased ammo and save the brass for places where you can control it, like with buddies you really know and can lay the ground rules in the beginning and not have to worry about them screwing you.

What's wrong with telling him to leave your brass alone, you will be picking it up.
You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

you shoulda armed your gun with a loud brake, then they wouldn't have shot so close to you that they could take all the brass

If he did that with my .338 Lapua or .458 SOCOM brass, I'd threaten to put a hole in his tire if he didn't give it back.
Anyway...here's a dearth of reasoning to ponder: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Guns

Damn near the exact same thing happened to me, so now I mark my ammo with distinct colors. I got into a little argument with some d-bag at a local range about taking my brass, which of course he totally denied. I'm a regular there so the range master sided with me and requested to check the plastic bag full of brass. 50% of all the brass was mine!!!!!! Needless to say the individual was embarrassed and coughed up my property
