Sometimes it's not worth it, especially if it's a friend of someone you know and you don't want to start any drama. I totally get that.

I stripe all my brass, and before I start shooting I tell people around me that my brass is striped, usually while handing them brass that clearly didn't come out of my gun and saying "here I think this is yours, all my brass is striped."

At that point almost everyone gets the clue.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

On my desert trip last weekend I went out with a few of my dad's friends, my father (his first time, was super anti gun till I got him to join us) my dad's friends father and some church buddies of theirs.

Anyways I brought almost all my guns (you can see the calipers in my sig) and the other guys had mostly 22's, 308's, ARs and 12 gauge shotguns. So my cousin who couldn't go who reloads 12g said hey bring back all your hulls and some extra if you can. I said yea sure I reload my calibre so I'll bring my brass home too.

So were shooting for a few hours and it's starting to calm down and I make a call to save me all the brass I reload so I need mine. I start picking up a few cases I just fired and out them in the truck and go load up another mag or 2 for my father. I turn around and click off safety and am about to shoot when I see one of the guys start picking up all the brass in my area and his son his brass and hulls.... Ok that's fine they can keep their brass. Just leave mine. So I'm just about to shoot and he is picking up brass right in front of me about to shoot. Ok I'll wait....

Long story short trips closing up and I start looking for my and extra brass. The SOB scavenged 90% of the brass we ALL shot. So I'm like ok fu**er and look for what ever is left. Then I hear them talking about yea hopefully SOON WE WILL START RELOADING...... Your telling me you just snagged the brass I called for that I want to RELOAD because I already reload because you PLAN on reloading in a few years.... Are you kidding me?!?!

He picked up at least 5k rounds of shells and about 2k of mine. I was so pissed. They literally didn't bother until I put the note out hey save me my brass and yours if you don't want it.. He bolted to make sure he got all of it. This guy is maybe all of 70 years old or older and PLANS on reloading. Not to offend the other reloaders but come on if you don't reload yet your times a bit limited now let alone when a actual reloader is there and kindly asked for brass at least my own brass.

I don't know it really got me that someone would literally snake brass from a reloader who doesn't even reload and be that selfish. Let alone go in front and under my muzzle to do so... And me come back almost empty handed for my cousin and his wanted hulls after he gave me a box of 12g I could shoot so I could bring him shells...

Has anyone else had something like that happen before? Sorry I just needed to vent this and hopefully get some reassurance I'm not an idiot for being kinda ticked at this.

        /rant, thanks for listening
Still trying to figure out who you went shooting with... I WOULDA fixed this but damn, it makes my head hurt. I am normally not a grammar nazi but damn man, just DAMN...

I am gonna guess that it sounds like a Shoulda Woulda Coulda...

You SHOULDA been more aggressive about YOUR brass and then maybe he WOULDA left your's alone but instead of coming back here and *****ing about him you COULDA tracked down that br@sshole and busted his hip... Then maybe he would have gotten the message that he SHOULDA left other folks' brass alone. I at least WOULDA told him to back the **** off. I personally will NOT get into a fight taking OTHER brass from people, but if a hoover comes near me he is gonna git informed that he COULDA done something else. just saying...

Please for future stories, just go shooting by yourself. That or count to ten a few more times, I think you were still fuming when you typed this.

I suggest next time you take a minute to calm down, gather your thoughts, and then respectfully go hash out your issues with the person that offended you. Maybe they're a little dense and didn't realize the etiquette of only taking the brass that you brought/shot. Maybe they just heard "pick up the brass so that it can be reloaded" and figured "hey, that sounds like a good idea, let's keep it!"

Either way, there's a saying about an ounce of prevention, and blah blah blah. When I go shooting with new people, I explain to them that everybody must pick up their brass and shells so that we don't litter. I then explain to them that they are worth money to reloaders, and so whoever bought the ammo gets to keep the brass/shells. If someone bought ammo but doesn't reload, I tell them they can keep it, try and sell it, or I'd be glad to take it off their hands. I've never had a problem with people when I explain that stuff in advance. Heck, we usually hire the kids that come along to pick up the brass and shells for $1 per50 or 100 that they collect. That way I don't have to find the brass, and the kids have fun finding it.
Dis some good **** right here... +1 Is what OP SHOULDA done...

Anyone gets near my brass and I tell them to leave it alone. I do not care who they are. I worked too hard too many years to let someone STEAL it from me.
I would also tell them I was going to shoot and get back away. That is a safety issue. Pure and simple.
If they tried picking up my brass close enough to me I would step on their hand.
I also have it real clear BEFORE SHOOTING that I want my brass and any other that someone else does not want. That is true even if they pick it up. If I provide the firearms and they bring some ammo I want the brass usually.

If someone takes my brass that would be the last time I ever shot with them.

I also plan to start making them bring there own targets and tape. I have probably given away $100 in tape and targets in the last year or so. I do not mind the 1st time but after several times it get old hat.

Sounds like you need to stop shooting at the police range...

Rule #37 of reloading.... Save the last magazine for unruly brass scavengers. Implementation of this protocol averts any future brass policing awkwardness.

I went through something similar at Angeles. I'm utterly rigorous about only grabbing my own brass, I know the RO sell it for extra money. More than once I've gotten hassle from them for re-claiming my own property.

If your pistol ejects brass over a few feet away are you not supposed to claim it or something? What ****** me off is I don't even recover half my brass, rifle or pistol. They can be such petty minimum wage tyrants, some of them.

I guess I can mark my brass, or get a catcher, or just write it off.

I gotta find a better range.

OH! OP: dude was 70+, you were right to leave him alone. *next time* you can mark your brass, collect it as you go, use a catcher, all that jazz. To be a cynic he wouldn't be the first guy to use his age or status as a shield against criticism for his bad behavior.

The good will of the event is what was important, not $100 worth of brass or so. A confrontation of any type over the brass could cause NO END of resentment or problems down the line.

You totally did the right thing. You gotta pick your battles, and that was one where I think you could easily have wished you never said anything.

Easy for me to say when it's not my brass. This kind of stuff causes me no end of irritation, and I'd be hacked for a good long time if it happened to me. It's not the brass, it's the principle of the thing.

Pretty basic etiquette you don't steal from your buddies or they don't go out with you. Good case for a revolver or bolt gun.

                                Two words: Brass catcher

I actually made mine based off another Calgunner's PVC stand design. It catches ~95% of my brass sitting on the bench and standing. I usually use a box when prone. If I know I won't be able to collect my brass due to the location/event/people as another person mentioned, steel cases are your friend. Or just shoot a lot of .22lr
