Well I set the bullet at max length and they still won't seat all the way... tried buying a rcbs puller ar turners and tried screwing me.

You may be packing and compressing the powder on your max load when you seat the bullet. You may want to try other powder that allows you to get that max velocity without packing/compressing the powder. I have some leverevuoltion for trade/sale if you are interested.

Nothing wrong with compressed loads but a couple extra feet per second from a 30-30 will get you nothing. IMO

books are regulated by lawyers. they can be sued if they recommend too high or if a powder thrower can easily throw unsafe charges due to their spread. i would guess you are ok at 33.8(at your own risk). I saw an old book say 46g was max for RL-15 and a 168g pill. Now you see number like 42-43g for that load. They are worried about lawsuits because a dead person can be expensive so keep it low. look at this for example, how can hornady create their superformance ammo shoot 200fps faster than their book can recommend? yet old manuals show speeds very similar... do what you want but i would guess you wouldnt start seeing pressure signs until you get closer to 33.8.

Also realize that even in those days, they had disclaimers because of printer errors. You can't be sure that it's correctly printed, from here. It's too old. I used to load .30-30, didn't ever have a compressed load, but that could have been powder choice. I was going after a powder that I could actually use 30 grains of, because it amused me.

I got rid of my old .30-30 and got a .356 M94AE. It is EXTREMELY intolerant of long cases and long rounds. The Marlin I had before it was a tad more tolerant. The front tubular magazine restraint and I are old friends!

The 30/30 is a great round for what it is. Don't try to make it a .308. 748 or 3031 works fine. seat to the cannelure. Winchester 94's are not the strongest actions out there. Play it safe, load safe. 150 grainers are usually more accurate in my rifles.

Here are my notes from a year long journey to eliminate velocity spreads on my 30-30 trapper model. This is using a 170gr Sierra & Winchester 748.

Loaded powder spreads starting @ 28.0gr & increased 3% each. 28.0, 28.8, 29.7, 30.6, 31.5. Two highest had least spread. Groupings good for all loads. Will increase powder & test again.

Interesting. The Lyman manual starts at 31.7 grains and the Sierra manual ends at 31.7 grains??? The older manuals are pushing it harder and nearly 5 grains of difference in powder weight yields only 100fps difference in speed. My last loads at 31.5 showed zero signs of pressure, so I am going to continue moving up. Here is what I have done so far:

31.5 + 3% = 32.4gr

32.4 + 3% = 33.4gr

33.4 + 2% = 34.1gr

Grouping @ 34.1 wasn't quite as good as 33.4gr, but it might have been fatigue. 34.1 had the lowest velocity spread though. 34.1 velocity testing:
1924, 1943, 1943, 1946, 1940, 1946. Spread = 22fps, Average = 1940. Sighting in on warmer day gave these number: 2060, 2063, 1984, 1969, 2041, 2023, 2032, 1943, 2005, 1993. spread = 120, average = 2011fps

Win. 748 is known to be temp sensitive.

Average fps over 16 shots on 2 different days = 1984

This is in no way a recommendation and/or guidance for a safe load. You MUST start low and work your way up on your own.

That being said, building low and building up while reading your spent cases is safer than reading a manual.

Well the best groupings I got with 150gr sierra flat nose, with 3031 was at 30gr.

I then picked up lever revolution powder and got even better groupings with 37gr of powder. Needless to say that's my go to load. Ill use what little 3031 I have left for plinking rounds or an emergency stock or something. ..
