7.62x54R Reloading Question

When buying bullets for 7.62x54 can I pick up any .311 bullets or do I have to get specific lengths? I found some .311 bullets I like but the are labels as follows...

"303 Caliber, 7.7mm Japanese (311 Diameter) 180 Grain Spitzer"

...Will they work in my Mosin Nagant?

those will work.

most in the .310 to .312 range will be ok, but slugging the barrel to determine the bore dia is best way to determine optimum bullet fit.

The lenght usually varies by the grain size

I've used all kinds of bullets in my mosin. from 110gr .308's to 180gr .311's. It shot them all pretty decent. I mostly loaded the 123gr .310 Hornady soft points for plinking by pulling the bullets from surplus ammo and pressing in the hornadys. It like the 165gr TSX too

I just picked up some die and projectiles but I am short brass. Do you guys recommend any particular brass or brand of loaded ammo I can shoot then reuse. I had read that S&B has a pretty weak throat and cracks after the first load.

Yea, get some Prvi Partizan ammo. Its very good quality brass

Those will all work. Be sure to slug the barrel to know what size your barrel is (Mosins can be all over the place). My m38 is .310 and one of my 91/30's is .314. If you have a Finn I have read they can be true .308.

Lapua just had a great sale on brass; it was like $40 for 100 pieces, or something. (I got 200 )

Where was the sale?! I just hit lapua's site and there is no direct sale's, Midway was close to 100.00. You can tell you got my attention with prices like that I would buy 200-400 cases.

Most Lapua brass is about $1 a pop per brass even pre-election.
Not sure why this was such a great deal but I took it. -g

...and in 9 months, you'll see "rock bottom" prices because NO ONE will be buying. Just give it a few months...
