Having a problem resizing .556 and .223 brass

    Hello all,

This is a recent problem. The dies are farily new. I am having a problem resizing .556 and .223 brass. I am getting a dent just below the neck. It is not on every case but most. It makes it into the shell plate free of dents. Raise the patform and it comes out of the die with a dent.

Loading on a Dillon 650 with Dillon carbide .223 dies using Dillon lube.

    Thanks! Sammy

Sounds like you might have too much lube.

      Too much lube?

Can you post any pictures of the brass?

The lube is sprayed on very lightly. No way to apply it thick.

Looks like hydraulic denting to me.
I have followed all of their setup instructions, cleaned it and everything, but for some reason when the case is coming out of the die and it is almost out there is a lot of resistence and there is a

Clean the die and try again.

            First, try a different lube.
Second, try cleaning out your dye. Hit it with some break cleaner on the inside. It's likely what I think Joe pointed out... it causes an air bubble which effectively works like a solid lump of super-hardened steel.

yep, definitely over lubing. seen this many times before, i recommend taking the die apart and cleaning and then using lighter coating of lube

Yep, hydraulic creasing from lube buildup in die or too much lube on cases. Clean die, use lube sparingly.

BTW, those dents will iron right out when you shoot them.

Are you sure? i just throw them in my scrap box, im too afraid they will blow up in my gun to actually load them. i would think that it compromises the integrity of the shell, is that not so???

They will fireform back to normal in most cases. As long as here is not obvious cracks or you are shooting for accuracy...

I don't run those dies and am not sure if it has a vent hole or not. If it does make sure it not obstructed.

Like above you don't have to over lube, it can be an excessive build up or blocked vent

yep I would reload them and shoot them, they will fireform back

Nah. I still shoot those. It isn't enough of a dent to cause pressure problems. Ymmv.

For reference, when I lube, I squirt some on the tray, get a dab on my fingers, and just put the thinnest amount possible on the neck and shoulder area. I don't even go down the walls. You almost wouldn't even know it was there.
