A lot depends on the pistol. With a 158gr JHP, it is going to take a pretty long barrel to get 1600fps, definitely my 4" 686 won't do it.

I have that exact bet with my co-work regarding breaking the 1600 FPS with 16.7 gr H110 and 158gr XTP in a 8" Python.

I lost... With chrony set at 10 ft, I didn't even break 1500 FPS!

I dont have a chrono so the fps i was quoting was from the manual. If your not even getting 1500 fps in an 8" python id hate to see the actual numbers for my 4" 686. You wouldnt know it from shooting it though, its a huge difference from 38 spl.

On that note, id bet many of the .357 autoloaders would be capable of 1600 fps. Saw a guy at the field time range with one, what a sweet gun.

With my .38 special, i love 3.4 grains of 700X under an 148 grain hollow base lead wadcutter
I find 700X to be cleaner than 2400

I also prefer charges to be larger when using a single stage set up as it is easier to spot a double charge

I have avoided bullseye as it uses a very small charge

2400 is great for hot loads out of my .44 w 8 3/8" barrel
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Out of a Thompson/contender with a 10" plus barrel, then maybe. Out of any run of the mill revolver with a barrel less than 8", then no, you will not even get anywhere close to that. Hodgdon data shows almost 1600FPS with that powder but that's from a 10" barrel which is probably not vented to simulate the barrel/cylinder gap on a revolver. A realistic velocity from a 158gr jacketed bullet with a full charge of 296/H110 is in the 1200 FPS range from a 6" barrel. That's what most people who set up their chronograph properly will see. Lots of people set them up too close and get false high readings. Even Speer #11 data which is hotter than what's available now doesn't come close to 1600FPS. They have 17.8 gr for a velocity of a little over 1300FPS from a 6" security six.

A guy on another forum said when shooting his 41Mag with a full load of H110, he had to be sure and put the targets far enough away or he would set them on fire.

I've been meaning to try some Alliant Power Pro 300-MP. The numbers on their Reloader's Guide are insane.

Wow...I guess this is their competitor to H110/W296. Those numbers really are something else, compared to those of 2400, my usual powder. This stuff looks like it's worth a try!

This load is super fun to shoot and chronos at just under 1250fps out of a 4" Smith. I'll never look for another 357mag load as this one's a winner.

I don't know what munuals it's in if any. I got the data from some of the old timers on glocktalk.
This what I use for my Desert Eagle 357, works great. It does have a WOW factor!

Powder and primers from Powdervalley or Wideners, bullets depend on what im getting, usually xtreme or hitech. Dies and other supplies i get almost exclusively from grafs, sometimes cabelas when they have a sale, but never midway.
