    Question on Storing Brass

    Howdy All,

So I do not currently reload ammo nor will I for some time, but I've decided to start hoarding brass now in order to have a good cheap start when I do decide to drop the money on reloading equipment.

My questions is: How do I properly store spent, brass casings? Do I have to worry about rust or anything else? How do you guys do it?

I currently have them in plastic baggies by caliber.

    Thanks!

I would think baggies are ok... although not a sturdy storage source. I used baggies for small batches (20-40 rounds) but anything more I use the plastic jars that trail mix or peanut butter come in. Screw on lid (to seal it) & large capacity are a plus. I just affix labels to the outside with the manufacture, date and other details.

You can also use ammo cans... they do the job just fine. Can be sealed, hold alot and are stack-able.

Being that they are primarily brass... rust is not an issue. Oxidation/tarnishing is anything.. but again, just seal them up and keep them dry and you are GTG. (when you are ready to reload)

I use home depot 5 gallon buckets but then again my brass doesnt sit around for long. It been working for me but they do take up a lot of space.

Tupperware is good. 99 cent store has all kinds of sizes on the cheap. I initially sort by caliber into large containers, then when I'm ready to load I further sort that caliber by headstamp and whatnot. Rust isn't an issue for the brass case, but if left wet parts of the spent primer can rust and cause primer pocket issues.

Don't worry about the brass going bad !!! Just find a place to store it, be it a bucket, a box, a bag. When you are ready to use them just throw them in the Tumbler and each casing will come out looking shiny !!!

gallon sized freezer ziplocks with a notecard in each one describing what it is, how many times fired, state of brass preparation, etc.

Any kind of containers will do. Any food products you buy that comes in a tupperware, use that. Or if your seriously going to save a lot of brass throughout the years, buy those 5 gallon buckets at home depot.

Yup! Sandwich meat (deli sliced) comes in those. I probably have a hundred of them that I sort and pack my brass into. I tumble, decap/resize and flare before putting away and they're still shiny after months of storage.

Three gallon plastic containers with sealed tops.

Like Joe, my brass doesn't hang around too long. But then again, it's always nice to come across a container full of brass that I had forgotten about.
