I just found a Herters catalog from 1970.

    Powder was $2.50 a pound.
    Primers were $6 a thousand.
So based on that you can take what ever price we have today for ammo and nock a zero off the price and thats close to what it was in 1970.

But again what good does that do us today?

Mid-80's Winchester Wildcat .22LR at Target, yes the woke Target, .50 cent per 50 round box. Late 80's Norinco 7.62x39 20 round box $1. Early to mid-90's, 9mm 50 round box $5. 12 gauge birdshot 250 round case $35. Ah the good ol' days of cheaper ammo.

I used to be able to buy the Chinese 7.62x39 steel core ammo for$80 per can on 1000.. Or was it 1200? That was in the early 90's. Then Clinton banned the importation of it..

2 cent .308 from India? Sure, I remember those days. Of course, the $35 shipped cases of 7.62x54R training ammo were a great deal back around 2005. $79/1000 rounds of 7.62x39 was common then. I could go back to when I started shooting in the '70's but I wasn't paying for ammo then.

I remember 440 rnd brown spam type cans of 7.62X54R ruskie ammo cheap. Then I found out that 1 in 10 had to be hit twice, and some wouldn't fire at all. Got rid of them and didn,t buy any ruskie stuff ever again.

In order to do an accurate comparison you have to look at what your income was then versus now. Many people make 2-3 times or more now than they did back then.

The only real differences is the sales tax we now have to pay.

In many ways ammo is cheaper now then it was when I was making far less money.

I remember stacking up tricks for crazy cheap ammo, Cabela's gift cards at 20% off, active junky 10% cash back and then add in a sale or rebate and ammo was almost free,, a few of you will know what I'm talking about

Only regret was not buying a pallet.
