You pick the range.

Sure, riverside magnum range.... but bring a long stick with a hook because they don’t have line breaks all that often.

Time is worth a lot. Convenience and time saved is worth the extra cost.

I am actually one of the lucky ones and get to shoot every 4 to 6 weeks. I have friends that shoot only once every 3-4 months if they are lucky.
In spite of my frequent visits I cannot stand even a few minutes wasted. I usually stay more than 5 hours every time I'm at the range and try to maximize my time there. Any wasted time between line stops or setting up is time taken away from productive practice, tuning and testing loads.
I have owned a CED chronograph and gave it up as soon as I learned the Labradar was reliable, accurate and had a good price. Yes, $500 to me is a good price. It beats the Magnetospeed because there is very little to set up. Position it once and you or anyone else can shoot and get readings. If you are making $50k a year then your time is worth at least $25 per hour (without tax considerations). The total time saved is worth the extra money.
I have seen people shoot their chronograph at least three times and I'm not at the range every day. It takes up less storage space because you don't need a tripod down range. I carry it in an old laptop pouch. No wires to get tangled or coil up. (Have you ever pulled the wires accidentally and knocked the entire chrony set up over? I have done that a couple times and broke one of the sky shade mounts.)
Overall, you save a lot of time and that is worth more than the money. It depends how valuable you consider your shooting time and the investment in effort for your craft. We should all shoot more and troubleshoot less.

I know a way you can use one for free. Go to a shooting range that has someone using one and ask him/her to let you shoot a few groups at their bench with your firearm. The device is so safe to use you will likely make a new friend without worry about destroying the device. I have let people use it a few times and it is not a big deal.

I saw a guy from a YouTube video tape a 1 inch long section of a drinking straw into the groove of the existing sight. He said it works fine. I don't even need to use that.
