I started getting components in August and paid an average of $35 per 1k of SPP. I paid $50 for CCI match SRP and 41’s. I bought 2 K SPP at 70 each and 1 K at $80 but then found 1500 SPP for $35. Not including the Dillon XL750 , caliber exchange kits , dies , calipers, scales, swage and brass cleaning equipment etc. ,I’m between .12 -.15 for 9mm depending on bullet. It’s still less than .70 a round retail . .223 is coming at around .22-.24 cents for plinking ammo.
Prepping brass is a lot of work.

I was thinking of selling 2k of factory 9mm to finance some of the reloading equipment, but I’ll hold on . I’m hoping primers come back by the end of 2021 , but I have enough for 30 months , not including Rifle ammo and other pistol calibers .

Total $0.18. The commercial ammo is $0.2 per round. The break event point is $1500/0.02 = 75,000 rounds.
      Right before it was:

      .023 primer (Sportsmans $23 per K)
      .07 hi-tek coated bullets
.02 powder ($30 dollars per pound of bullseye at 4grains per bullet)
      free brass
But I always work in $15 per hour of my time. I was going to pay off my 200 dollar Lee Breechlock in 8000 rounds.

I think I paid less for the powder in 8lb jug.

I read this quite often. I load 9mm for 10.5 cents per round. This is for 124gr FMJ match grade ammo.

I shoot 20-25k rounds a year. The cheapest I ever bought 9mm in bulk was 17 cents per round. That was when we could still order online, no tax, no shipping, on sale. Average price I was paying was 19 cents per round. And mind you, this was for cheap FMJ. 115gr plinking ammo.

So even at 17 cents, that's 6.5 cents per round more than reload cost.

        At 20k rounds a year, I save $1300 a year. That's a gun and then some.

And mind you, because I buy in bulk, I'm still loading at that price. I have buddies that are paying 50-75 cents per round for **** ammo right now. And that's when they can find it.

I am at 13c per round. My factory ammo stash was bought at around 20c per round. So around a 7c spread during normal times. Don’t ignore the resale value of your press. Dillon seem to hold their value. Assuming I lose 20% when I resell during normal times, I lose maybe $300.

So in my mind it took around 4000 rounds to break even, and I did that in 2 months at my pace. In fact I have been going more these days since the ranges I go to are relatively empty (most people had no ammo), and so they are less strict on the range rules. But the thing with reloading is that you can dial in the cartridge to the gun and how you like to shoot. That is priceless.

I stopped reloading when I switched to 9mm. When you could buy in bulk, the savings were not there

For 38/357/44- you still have huge savings

Same with hunting Ammo. Or match rifle Ammo.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

You need to buy in bulk, and max out HAZMAT and shipping

                Primer 3.5 cents
Bullet 6.5 cents (lead or poly coated are much cheaper than Jacket or Plate)
                Powder 2 cents
                Brass Free

                $6.00 to make a box of 50.

With COVID bump the primer cost up to $0.07 and it's still $7.75 box/50

Power and Bullets can be had within reason. At least with bullets it seems one can still back order and just wait it out for a normal price.

If you want all your components now, yea, it will cost you.

Even if it's the same cost to reload 9mm as to buy it pre-pandemic...I'd still reload it. Even if it's just under the current pandemic prices, I'd still reload it. Why? Simple, it's because I'll have ammo when others don't.

So, it's still a good idea to get set up to reload it.

                    Brass: $0.1 (or free)

Total: $0.4 to $0.5 per round. About 50% cheaper than the 9mm ammo.

At $0.4 per round savings, an XL 750 package costing $1500, we will break even at $1500/0.4 = 3,750 rounds.

                    Pretty good.
And you'll recover your money even faster with a $350 Pro 1000 setup, including case feeder. It's easy enough to feed the bullets by hand. That figure is $350/0.4 = 875 rounds.

BTW, it's a similar cost/round to reload .38 Special, since they use the same primer and powder, and a very similar bullet.

Same here. Even though the cost of my components when I bought them were 9 cents per round, I bought 9mm for $170/1000 and didn't have to do any work. Plus I had the brass left over.

The same thinking is why I never bought .308 dies. Milsurp was 12 to 15 cents per round. Same as the components, and with no work. Loading .308 is a lot of work too, sizing and trimming those big cases.

If thats the last time you bought components, you are in for a shock.

Primer: $0.03 (New Sportsman Warehouse in Brentwood had five 1K boxes...until I got there. )
Bullet: Free (Handcast 124 gr. leftover wheel weight lead powdercoated)
Powder: $0.01 to .02 (I stick with minimal target loads)
Brass: Free (So many range finds these days)

                            So...maybe a nickel.

Then add in $/hr for all that time casting\coating bullet and running your press. I don't count brass cleaning cause it's pretty much automatic.
