I do not read AR15, I do not read anything by Lynn and there is another member that I believe to be socially dysfunctional that I do not read. I am not worried about them not liking me because I do not believe they like themselves.
In the real world: A smith/builder of military rifles said he was building a period correct 1911 Rock Island 03. He said he could not get a go-gage length chamber, he said he had 20 + 30/06 chamber gages. He said the go-gage was too loose, the no -go gage was too long and would not allow the bolt to close and 'forget the field reject length gage. I told him I could measure the length of the chamber from the datum/shoulder to the bolt face. I also suggested to check on the Internet.
He said he did make an effort on the Internet 'but as always' he regretted it. He picked one of the most socially dysfunctional forums; and as we all know it got ugly.
I was in his shop to purchase a mill, I paid him and then we loaded it. It was about this time he wanted to talk about head space. I told him "this is your lucky day"
It was after this he informed me he was building the Rock Island 03. AND THEN? he handed me a box of 20+ 03 head space gage. I asked him if he wanted to the length of the chamber in thousandths or if he wanted to know if one of the cases would fallow the bolt to close?
At this point I went through his tool boxes and stuff he had hanging on the walls and benches. I picked out enough tools to check the length of the chamber three different ways. the first way indicated his chamber was .0025" longer than a go-gage length chamber; meaning his chamber had .0075" clearance when a minimum length/full length sized case was chambered.
And then
I offered to modify his go gages from go gages to go- to infinity gages; problem, when finished the gage would no longer be period correct.
And then I suggested he go to a smith that had a special gage, the only one I have ever seen.
ANYHOW; all he wanted to know was the length of the chamber in thousandths. I offered to size cases to any length, he insisted the case fit the chamber with .005" clearance, problem he insisted the chamber had to be head space length. He insisted he did not want to change the barrel or receiver and he was not going to move the barrel back etc.. That left the bolt as being the only option.
Changing the bolt: He had 100+ bolts, I offered to check the effect each bolt had on offsetting the length of the chamber, before I started I assured him there was not one bolt in his large bucket of bolts that would reduce the length of the chamber .0025". I informed him I had 25 replacement bolts, I informed him none of my bolts would reduce the length of the chamber .0025".
And then there is the problem with the straight handle early 3 bolts. The only straight handle he had was the one he had in his rifle and I had one in a Rock Island 03.
The old forum was closed and the archives dumped; he claimed one of the members sent him a small bucket of straight handle bolts and that fixed it.
They could not measure the bolt to determine how much effect each bolt had on the length of the chamber. I suggested that method and or technique would come in handy if he ever needed another bolt. All he would have to do is call me.

I informed him I have never used a go-gage on the 03 or A3 rifle, I informed him I could measure the length of the chamber with any one of the three gages, I measure the chamber length in the 03 rifle in thousandths. And then I confused him by telling him I used transfers and I verified.
