primer issues on 9mm

I started reloading 9mm today on my Dillon 650. I a large batch of assorted brass. I had about 20 today not take a primer, or if it did it totally destroyed the primer. I reload 5.56 also and swage those, do they put crimps in some 9mm?? If so, will a 5.56 swage tool work on 9mm? Being they are both small primers?

I talked to someone at LEE because I was having a primer issue with 9mm as well. I was told most modern 9mm is crimped. I haven't really loaded 9mm much recently so I haven't been looking at the cases I have but that could be the issue.

Some some are crimped. The ones I've noticed are WCC.

Yes, the same tool used for your 5.56 will swage your 9mm.

When you see the NATO mark on a 9mm shell then yes. Crimped. I am unfamiliar with your swager. I do not know what you used, but any SR or SP primer pocket swager should work for any SP or SR primer pockets.

Worse case, check your cases with a primer pocket cleaner tool or just hit them all with a touch of the reamer that sits on a driver or drill... (the latter is not the best idea, but it works).

Maybe the majority of modern 9mm thats manufactured today is crimped (Military orders for NATO countries) but the majority you'll find in stores and at the range is not.

For example, S&B is typically uncrimped but if you get one made for a military, it will be.

Honestly...just toss the crimped ones....not worth the trouble..

That's 99.99% likely the issue.

Even S&B uncrimped brass has pretty tight primer pockets that could benefit from swaging. I just throw all my Crimped, Nickel and S&B brass into a bin to load when i know I'm going to loose my brass (training etc.).

~5% of 9mm pickup range brass is crimped, that is enough to futz-up Dillion 650 ops.

It is in the initial inspection:
Berdan...spits & bulges...just plain old fubar pick-up brass in any caliber.

Ok thank you for the replies, and info. I think I will sort through my bin and see how many I find. It may be worth it to just get rid of them. If there a lot I may save them for the future when I am low on brass and have the time to swage them all.

Back in the old days, I would chamfer every case lightly inside and out and, if the primer pocket was crimped, run the chamfer over the primer pocket to remove the crimp.
This eliminated brass shavings from the sizer and expander and allows one to seat jacketed bullets without having to flare the case mouth.
Just the way we did things in the Jurassic Era.
