running loaded ammunition through a sizing die

I have some once fired 308 LC brass that I ran through a dillon on dillon dies. Afternloading the ammo, i found that it it would only fire through a semi-auto and not a bolt action. After speacing to the seller, he recommended using a Redding FL Small base sizing die.

I have used the die on what few empty cases I had left and they all feed now. It seemed that the base of the brass was still to large after running it through the dillon. Would anyone here fun any of the loaded brass through the sizing die?

I doubt it is physically possible - but even if it were, you'd bee foolish to do so. Break them down, resize them properly, and then reload them.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

      Cannot.

The sizer squeezes the neck to under-size, as the brass springs Bach and the expander ball opens it up a bit.

But lead does not spring back.

So the bullets will be squeezed undersize, and left loose in the necks.

I did it with pistol ammo once just to see.

Get a collet bullet puller and redo them.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Forster makes a "Body Die" that doesn't touch the neck. They come in standard and small base. Of course 99 people will say never re-size loaded cartridges and you should probably listen to them. I am the one dissenting opinion.

If one had a body die as you explain, that did not touch the neck. That would be an exceptional exception to the "Don't do it".

A second dissenting opinion here. Every so often my reloading OCD fails and something gets loaded that won't fit in the various .308's I shoot. I run the loaded rounds through a Redding body die and it does what it is designed to do: it resizes the case body only, allowing the rounds to chamber.

                  You're gonna die!

In sword making, REAL Japanese sword making, it is ceremonial to strike the tip of the metal with a hammer in a fast/hard fashion in which the metal gets HOT from being moved quickly. That heat is then used to start the fire that the sword will be forged in. So yeah, if you want to resize your brass with powder in it, knock yourself out. I like to think that I am so badass hardcore that if I were to do that, I would do it so fast that I would ignite the powder inside... Of course, I also tend to have delusions of grandeur as well...

Well, OP said they shoot fine through a bolt gun.

If it were me, I'd "pull" those bullets with the bolt gun and just reload the brass for the semi-auto the next time around. Just mark them for your bolt gun.

Redding's lawyers warn specifically not to resize loaded ammo in their body die.
It worked fine for me the couple times I did it.

How many rounds? Is to worth the cost to modify some ammo that you can shoot in the other gun?

Wise words from all. It is about 1000 rounds so I have to believe that the odds are not in my favor. Even if the odds are .1%, I am still there. This is obviously the check I am writing to the school of hard knocks.

The resizing die is not the type that decaps. It is the one for the shoulder bump. Maybe this is why they call it a die. If I mess it up....I die.
