    Popped a cap today

Do you use a bullet puller? Yeah me too

Today, I was pulling a few 9mms, you know, the ones where the primer didn't seat properly due to crimped primer pockets, flipped primers, sideways primers....

First 4-5 went fine, the next one, first strike on the ground, ok, second strike on the ground and the primer ignited.

Yeah no kidding, on a live round. Good thing the only thing that went off was the primer

My wife was standing about 5 feet away waiting to show me a pic on her phone, scared the hell out of both of us.

Not that I have pulled a lot, maybe 50-60, this was the first time a primer has ignited

Have you had one go off?

Only the primer popped ? How is that possible if it was a live round ?

I have, unfortunately, pulled 100's and never had one go off.

What kind of puller were you using?

          Sounds like a kinetic type.

I've done 100's with one of those without incident.

i'm trying to think how it would do that. Not questioning the OP's truthfulness just trying to wrap my head around the physics.

I have only had to chuck a few rounds in the trash..........but I cringe even looking at the hammer type bullet pullers.

Just does not seem natural to do that on a live bullet.........but I do dig out sideways primers with a utility knife ,out of the hand prime, since it locks the brass to the shell holder.....I fully expect a knuckle full of shrapnel and black burns each time.

He said flipped primers and sideways primers... Obviously the flash hole was blocked when the primer went off...

Now the question is was it a sideways or a flipped? It would be interesting to know. If it was a sideways how flat did you crush that primer?

Wow. I'm glad you guys are OK. I never had one go off in my inertia puller but I always had the fear that one might. That's the reason I bought an RCBS collet bullet puller. And, pulling bullets is so much easier now!

Yep. That can happen. Not too common. Sudden pressure on a cartridge.

I had a medical examiner explain that to me 30 plus years ago as he was showing the class pictures of former people stretched out on his work table(s).

                        Hey everyone,

It was a hammer bullet puller.

I believe the primer was one that got crushed during loading due to crimped primer pocket, however can't be 100% as I was pulling about a 10-12. I too have pulled my fair share with this same puller and never had a problem before

Mixed 9mm brass, Winchester primer, Titegroup powder

My only guess was the flash hole was plugged as well, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good

                        Pretty freakin scary

                        Rick

The NRA magazine once showed a diagram of a kinetic puller blown apart when someone tried to take apart a rifle round that had not gone off when fired in a rifle. After seeing that diagram I have been very careful about taking apart rounds where the primer has been hit......never know how sensitive they are after that to shock. For those rounds I use the much less jarring collet puller.

Never had one cook off using dillon kinetic puller.

All the more reason to get a couple of GRIP N PULLS.
