Is reloading in a garage a bad idea?

I reload in my basement workshop that's full of woodworking equipment. If you periodically vacuum, I'd think you'll be fine.

You can also build a dust collector out of an old furnace blower and some scrap plywood. If you live near Truckee I can give you one that's usable even if it isn't pretty.

My setup is in the garage. I love it, but it gets pretty hot in the summer and it's pretty damn cold right now.

The two things you have to watch out for are your equipment and your components. Presses and dies can get a patina of rust, so you should keep them clean and coat them with a little oil once in a while. Primers and Powder should be kept at a relatively cool temperature. I store mine in a bin on the floor and against a retaining wall. They always remain less than 68 degrees, even in mid-summer.

I had all the same issues, so I moved my reloading operation inside to a spare bedroom and it's made all the difference in me wanting to spend more time reloading.

I say do it indoors if at all possible - even if you have to mount every thing to 2x4's so you can temporarily clamp your press/tools to a table.

You will spend lots of time and lots of money in the garage and all you will have to show for it will be lots of beautiful ammunition custom tailored for your guns.

I have my entire garage set up for gunsmithing and loading ammo. I live pretty close to the beach so one thing I learned quickly is that I need to cover everything with a towel when I'm not using it or when I break for the night. I also use a light coat of corrosionX on all my reloading equipment even with covering it. The salt air here is brutal!

I have one full car's worth of may garage designated for gun stuff. I have another smaller section dedicated to welding. I am a ****ty welder, more of a grinder than a welder.

Pro tip: Keep the welding area geographic ly separated from the reloading area.

A garage is the proper place. A good man will make his man cave suitable for comfortable hobbie enjoyments.

Another vote for garage. I have a den in the house and I still prefer the garage for reloading.

When I bought my place, one requirement was to have an extra bedroom as my gun room.

And one also with a kitchen and bathroom attached.

It appears that many of the reloading bench pics I see are in some type of spare room. Would setting up a reloading station in my garage be ok? I could set one up in my office but don't think my wife would like it much.

I guess it would be nicer to have heat and air in the office...

My set up is in the garage. Make sure to provide safe, dry storage for your components, have good lighting and ventilation and go for it!

I've never really needed heat in my garage. I can wear a jacket if needed.

As for propane heaters, It does raise my eyebrows, but in reality powder is really safe stuff. Tons of people have have gasoline and gas driven equipment/toys in their garage. I felt relieved when I got all but the motorcycle moved out of the garage and all the flammable liquids stored behind my storage shed away from the house.

My bench and mounted presses are in the garage..with most of my components...my powder and primers are in the house where the heat in the summer is not too high...When it gets really hot in the garage I grab what components I need and bring my Lee hand press inside to my desk in my office..I don't load big volumes there but at least I can keep my hand in when it's hot and dry...any big runs are always in the garage.

My last place had an extra bedroom I used as the gun/reloading room and a single car garage I used as a workshop.
My current place has an extra HOUSE I use for my workshop/gun/reloading rooms.
Since it's an extra house, it also has a kitchen and bathroom.

I have a 3 car garage, No room for a car, can barely get the grand-kids bikes in the garage. I reload in a spare bedroom, I do have an area in the garage for tumbling brass. As soon as I get the airplane project sold, I'll have more room, but I'll still reload in one of the spare bedrooms. I like the climate controlled room for storing components, but I REALLY like it for my own comfort.

My wife is supposed to stay out, unless she helping me. She enjoys (she says) feeding emptys into the press while I do everything else.

But it's hard for her to resist wanting to "straighten things up" But at least now that she's become a bit of a shooter, she feels like she should help with the reloading process......

I used to reload in the garage. Got the light mist of rust thing started as others have mentioned.

Now, have combination guitar/reloading room in house. Reloading press is next to the 100w Marshall 4x12 stack...

I do still tumble and sort in the garage though.
