Batteries are no longer suitable as a lead source for casting!!!

The posts may still be suitable but the chemical make-up of the plates has changed -- plates are now toxic --

there is nothing new in batterys that make them more toxic they have always been toxic if you melt the plates you will get much vaporized lead sulfate, lead oxide sulfur dioxide and minute amounts of molecules containing arsenic and antimony

its just people dont like getting lead poisoning and smell like a rotten egg for a month

Buy a shovel and go berm mining. It's like panning for gold but the nuggets start at 115 grains and hurt if you drop them on your foot.

Anyway there's always people selling lead for a buck a pound, more or less. This guy's good http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1118542 or you can poke around the threads here or on cast boolits. You won't know the exact alloy and if that matters to you go with rotometals but you're going to be paying more of course.

Look up your local metal recycling center. Usually they sell lead for around $0.35 lb. Play around with the BHN hardness and find something that works. or, you can go the commercial rout, Roto metals has a pretty good deal. You spend $100 and get free shipping.

I have a 5gal bucket of old wheel weights. Also old melting pot and a lee press for I believe lube will sell or trade for components. This stuff was given to me, I never got into casting. Also check craigslist. I live in Lake Elsinore

I guess the days are gone where typesetters use lead, that's where my Dad used to get it from for free at the time.

Local recyclers. Since you are hiding location cannot refer you where to go.

reloading is like building tiny rocket ships. and testing how well they fly (or dont).

Back when I needed to buy lead I could by bulk lead from McMaster Carr for 5 bucks per lb ( ouch ) but I could buy lead shot from the gun store for 25 bucks for 25 lbs. I never boughtit from McMaster again. Don't know what a bag of shot is these days.
My worst day shooting is better than my best day at work.

$1/lb and add shipping costs? Might as well buy as-cast and unlubed bullets and melt them down--cost about the same.

Capthowdy the "PRIVATE RELOADING SALE" section in Calguns is a good source for cheap lead. Also check Craigslist. Forget about tires shops since lead wheel weights has been phased out several years now and zinc is whats being used. Call your local recyclers first before buying scrap lead from them. There are some who dont sell scrap lead. If you go berm mining, make sure you skim off all the debri and impurity from the lead
Look into powder coating cast bullets. Check You Tube on how to.

1000 rounds of 200 grain bullets weighs about 28 1/2 lbs. Where do you see anyone selling 1000 rounds of 200 gr. cast bullets for $28.50? I am casting 45 cal. 200gr. SWC right now.......and it's a bunch of labor, so there is that to consider. Then later I will be running them thru a lube sizer before loading, so the fun/labor ain't over yet.
