45 Caliber small vs large primer ID

Is there a good way to ID 45 empties before they are de primed.
I have some mixed and don't want to de prime off the press.

Why yes, there is. Look at them. If you doubt your ability to discern the difference at a glance. Place one of each, mouth side down on your bench as reference when you sort your brass. Then keep them seperate for loading and shooting purposes after sorting.

^^ Nailed it. Just look at them. When you are done doing 5000+ you will still have a few in the wrong pile if you are like me. Old tired eyes do not help the process a bunch.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

A bench mounted magnifying glass with a light can make processing brass much easier on your eyeballs.

the ones ive seen also have a crimp which is much easier to spot at a glance than the smallness which is fairly obvious in itself

are you trying to get some kind of non visual way to sort them

ooh an easier way would be as you find the small ones remember the exact head stamp and keep them handy as a reference

I have been trying to eyeball them, but man, maybe I just need more experience. I think for now I will de-prime, eyeball, or test with a primer pocket reamer, until I get better at eye balling. Then once sorted use percent marker to distinguish between the 2. I just wanted to make sure their wasn't a trick, like a soda straw or something is the exact same size or something.
            Thanks for the tips.

You just hit on an idea there... find something that is the size of the spp and then you can just place it over the primer. If it covers the primer then it is spp, if not then LPP.

Most, and I say most, SPP headstamps I've come across are blaser, speer or federal. However I have caught some from cbc, and a few other oddball makers as well.

i guess you could deprime every thing and put a 3/16 drill bit in a vice tip down and if the pocket slides over put it in one bin and if not the other bin

I typically will grab a group of 5-9 shells at once and look at them. At a quick glance with them all grouped together it is usually very easy to spot the culprits- err small pistols.

Just set a whole bunch on a surface case mouth up, squeeze them together and grab and flip over. Easy Peasy.

Looks like a $2k hammer to me... LoL...

So you have to be there to manually pull out the LPP?

I never knew people struggled with this. I thought it would be an initial shock and then gotten over and moving on...

I'm pretty sure that rig in the video is all automatic. He pulled it out manually to show for the camera. In operation the LPP brass is loaded and the SPP is kicked out. Probably can be ran vice versa also

Why does it matter when decapping? They use the same die whether it is small or large primer, and it's probably a bit easier to tell when the primer is out.

That said, it is a generality that it seems like most factories use large primers, but Blazer Brass and Federal made them with small primers for a while.

You may miss a few. Once you are ready to reload, you can prime the small primer 45 first as you won't jam the primer by putting a small primer in a large primer pocket.
