There is nothing illegal about reloading for a friend. But in order to do it right you'll need his rifle and some range time.

Reloading is not about slapping loads together. It is not like refilling a gas tank. Factory ammo undergoes a lot of testing before being sold. Similarly, reloads should undergo testing before being "released".

Nobody with any common sense or a basic grasp of the law would reload for someone else.
This is no different than that 19 year old who stands out in front of a gas station asking you to buy him or her beer.
Since when is the simple truth not enough? Common Sense and a polite explanation as to why should be enough.

There would be nothing ILLEGAL about reloading for another, unless it was for profit. All the repeated and ridiculous grossly exaggerated claims of illegality are just unnecessary bovine excrement.

Comparing a legal but unsmart act, with blatantly breaking the law by supplying alcohol to a minor is plain old fashioned internet FUD.

OP, nobody with any COMMON SENSE is going to go out on a limb and possibly open themselves to "CIVIL LIABILITY". In this overly litigious society we live in. Just to do a "favor" for an anonymous internet stranger. Doing so would not be ILLEGAL. It just wouldn't be SMART.

Unless you are serious about the shooting sports to the point you are willing to add the hobby of reloading to further your shooting experience. You would be best served by continueing to just by factory ammo.

If you are a hunter, Buzzard Proof ammo cost approx $40 per 20 rnds. With one of these as a starter setup. And cost of components. You can get started reloading for a bit over $100.

If you shoot much, it's time to learn to reload. If you don't shoot much, just buy the ammo. I have a remington 700 in 7mm remington Magnum that I shoot a lot and reload for it. It is not that hard. Big Bronco has a great class every once in a while and you can learn very easily. I would be happy to give you some pointers as well.
No, I won't reload for you, but I can tell you how to reload yourself.
I started reloading the magnum, then the .38, and then the .223, then the .45 and now the 7.62 x 54......... You get the idea, it is very rewarding and worth learning.

Excellent response. The difference between illegal and doing something legal but that might get you sued in civil court was the distinction that I was trying to make. In re-reading my original post I realize that I wasn't clear.

Too many of what we used to call "barracks lawyers". Thanks pacrat.

So, if I give a buddy a box of reloads that is a crime? What law, specifically, am I breaking?

I don't sell reloads, never have. But I am curious. If I am on a camping trip and my friend runs out of 22 LR and I give him a box, will the ATF arrest me? Are reloads different?

Not being a smartass, just genuinely curious. If giving someone I know a box of my reloads is breaking a law then please tell me, I will stop doing it.

Or is this in the same realm as the internet myth that defending yourself with home reloads will get you in more trouble than shooting someone with factory loads? Massad Ayoob has buried that legend on more than one occasion.

In the interest of clarity I re-worded my original post.
Selling reloads or reloading for profit is illegal without the proper FFL (06 or 07). Giving someone your reloads is not the same but, you are still personally liable for anything that might happen. I don't know anyone who would be willing to give their own reloads to someone they did not personally know and trust. Likewise, only a fool would take reloads from an unlicensed reloader they propositioned on the internet. I have helped plenty of newbies reload their own ammo including furnishing all components but, I would never reload for someone I did not know extremely well and trust with my life.

I never get telling people they should have looked in the search function ( implied ). If one cannot ask the same question over and over, then why even have the forums. Just shut them down and have people search instead of posting. Nothing says you have to respond and people who do respond should not get their panties in a bunch because the question gets asked often. So according to you, know one should ask a question without researching and finding the answer first. Like I said, why even have the forums if everything is already out there like low hanging fruit. At least the OP didn't join one day and then try to sell his reloads the next and totally bypass trying to be part of the Calguns community.

On the reloading question, I have loaded for friends before. honestly I always felt a little uncomfortable knowing that if they screwed up I could be held liable so I quit awhile ago and just let them load on my press, but we all load our own since I have numerous presses and it's a great time. I bet you could find somebody near you that if you bought the components, they would teach you about reloading. I really enjoy showing people how to reload and you usually make a pretty good friend.

I load my own ammo, but when I take my family members, nephews, brother, daughters, etc, they only shoot factory ammo. I'm quite anal when it comes to safety, but it just takes one mistake to make a fun day into a disaster.

I would not be able to forgive myself if a round that I made caused serious injuries or death to anyone. With that said, I don't reload rounds for use by anyone but me, period. I won't shoot other peoples reloads either.

                  I live in Costa Mesa.

                  I think I can buy20 150gr factory new for about $28.

                  Should I go buy?
I wouldn't be comfortable reloading the ammo for you to use but I would be willing to have you come down to my house in North San Diego County and learn about reloading first hand.

I have recently started reloading myself and can say that it's a great experience and not as complicated as it may seem. I have reloaded 6.5 Grendel and 223/5.56 ammo without any issue.

Let me know if you want to meet up and learn more about reloading.

                  Cheers!

I just reacted to what I highlighted about you thinking that most reloaders "They don't worry about legal liabilities or anything like that." The fact is that most reloaders I know are worried about legal liabilities as well as moral liabilities.

I always like a good blunt Scobun post. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I do not, but he's a man that isn't afraid to speak is mind.

OP, just take it as a lesson learned about asking things over the internet. It's an innocent question, but you probably should have just asked a friend that reloads if he would do it and gotten his reaction.

Folks need to follow the law, it's plain and simple. However, you will get a holier than thou post from many as it's a public forum and there are a lot of anti-2A folks that frequent it, so I think folks go through a little extra effort to emphasize that they are following the law.

The truth is, most of the gun folks I know are extremely careful about following the law because if you break it, you can lose your gun rights.

Personally, I only load for my guns because those are the only ones I know how to properly load for.

                            OK,

Set up a "foundation". Sell the reloads at a loss to avoid triggering the law. Have the OP donate the difference to the "foundation".
