Hornady 45 Cal FTX Seating?

what 45 LC dies do you have right now?
i have the lee .44 mag stem for the ftx and the hornady for 357

I actually, loaded some .45 Colt with 250gr Hornady FTXs this weekend.

The seating dies for .45 Colt should be the same as 454 Casull, so do not limit your search to .45 Colt.

I used a Redding 45 Colt/454 Casull die with no ill effect.

The tricky thing is that you want to set the OAL based off the ogive since that tip is very long.

I just want to apologize. I read FTX and I immediately thought of the Leverlution type of bullets. WIth the little pointy missile heads. The FTX has the little smooth nubbbins right? My bad if I got them wrong.

I do not know if Whorenady says to trim the brass shorter for those.

Stilly, I believe that the Leverevolution uses FTX bullets.

I am trying some out as their profile looked like it was worth a shot. However, they were a little pricey. Here are some of my 45s, a Hornady XTP, Hornady FTX, and a Zero. As you can see, that tip makes the round longer. I do not know why you'd want to trim the brass shorter though. I could see where some seating dies might not work.

I've seated those bullets using the barnes stem from my 460 S&W die set. Those of us that use RCBS dies can use the barnes stem.

The reason to trim brass short is if you have the following limitations:

-firearm has an OAL limit
-the FTX when seated to the crimp groove is longer than the OAL limit
-the case tension isn't good enough to hold the bullet when seated past the crimp

The solution is to load the bullet to max OAL and trim the brass down till the mouth hits the crimp groove, and crimp.

Of course, looking at your 45's, I see no reason to think you don't have plenty of case tension! my 460 rounds look similar.
