Max OAL for 9mm is 1.169. Pressures go up quickly when bullets are seated deeper than a specified recipe - just a little warning...

I like WSF, Universal Clays, Unique burning rate powders. HS6 and 231 are twin sisters, work well in fairly light loads with lead bullets.

    all the best,
    Mike
There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

It's a muzzle BRAKE, not a muzzle break. Or is your muzzle tired?

      Hey all,

So I'm sitting in my backyard and bout to start some loading when I ran into some problems and need some help if anyone is willing to give it.

I have two books, sierra's reloading 3rd edition and lyman's pistol & revolver 3rd edition. I ran into some contradicting information.

Lyman's only had info on 115gr jhp. I was wondering if 115 FMJ could be used interchangably for powder load.

It says in there the load for 115gr JHP for 231 is suggested at 3.5 with 4.9 max.

I checked in the sierras 3rd edition and it says starting should be 4.6 and maxamum is 5.5 for 115 FMJ.

If someone could, I would really appreciate if someone would tell me the starting load and maxamum loads for powder W231 with 115gr FMJ.

      Thank you in advance~

Get a loading book for the bullet you are using.

There is a huge difference in bullet length for FMJ and Hollowpoints of the same weight in the same cartridge.
The length changes the amount of available combustion chamber.
The change in combustion chamber makes a radical change in pressure given the same charge.

Get a loading book for the bullet you are using.
Follow the recipe including the OAL.

I thought HP38 and W231 were supposed to be "twin sisters."

HP38 and WW231 are the same powder, made by Olin and packaged by two different companies.

I don't think thats possible. I'm loading Golden West Brass bullets. I don't think they have a reload book. If it helps, my bullet length is 14.85-14.95mm

Ask them what brand of bullet their bullet is most equivalent to and then use that data.
The worst thing you can do is compare HP to FMJ data.
                You just need more books.

                Also consider the Midway Loadmap.

Another good source - if you're using a Hodgdon / Winchester powder - is the Hodgdon online load data. For 9mm and 45acp, it's quite thorough. And yes, FMJ and JHP's of the same weight will have different dimensions. This can even be true between lead bullets of the same weight.

                      Thanks WJH~

I'm on that site right now. It actually only has data for LRN for 115grain and one for GDHP. No luck there. Thanks though for the reference!
