Shipping large amounts ammo

call up Main Freight - wouldn't hurt to call and get a quote. but a single pallet under 1klb would be around the 500$ range -Comment

No. That's because I can sell 1,000 lbs of components much easier than I can sell an equal weight of reloaded ammo. It's also easier to carry the primers and powder needed to load that quantity and ship the rest of the components any way I want to.NRA Life Member

Sell it now. Buy it when you get there. If you know someone at your new local, ask them how the ammo supply is. you cannot sell reloaded amo anyway so that is an invalid point. You may have mean't to say loaded ammo.Comment

Well, that depends doesn't it. If I reloaded it, I can't LEGALLY sell it unless I had the proper FFL when I loaded it. If I bought commercially reloaded ammo, you bet I can sell it.NRA Life Member

The ammo is mostly factory but some commercial reloads. Selling it was always an option. I'm comparing my alternatives. I would easily lose more than $500 on a sale, but spare the headache and risks. The enclosed trailer sounds good since I do have to cart other stuff as well.
I will also look into shipping a big pallet. Up to this point I've only checked UPS. I still have at least a month to figure it out.Comment

If you can tow a trailer I would suggest just buying a trailer, and if you don't need it then sell it when you get to your new home. Problem solved and not out much money either. If you look around a bit you might be able to make some money on the move

You really have 1,000 lbs of loaded ammo? That seems like an awful lot. Just to get an idea of how many rounds that would be, I weighted a loaded 40 S&W 180 gr reload I have. It weights 268 grains. It would take over 27,000 similar rounds to make 1,000 lbs. but if you do, you do. Good luck with you move.
Buying a trailer and selling it on the other end would be a hassle but would probably be the cheapest in the long run.NRA Life Member

If you can't drive it, sell it. When we moved to idaho it was in the back of the truck. I was just off the bump stops for the ride.
As for shipping it, not worth it. Shipping is expensive.Starve the beast, move to a free state.

longistics regarding the munitions aside, if you are planning on purchasing an SUV, I would recommend you purchase a west coast SUV and not an east coast SUV. Especially if said destination has a yearly snow fall. Rust is as much a friend to vehicles as it is to guns. Thanks for the suggestions guys. Keep it up.
My weight estimate might be high. I will put it on a scale this weekend. A trailer is a good idea. I'm seriously considering buying a used or new SUV if I plan to buy one anyway.
I will check out shipping rates on a pallet. Are there any ground carriers other than UPS and FedEx? Time is not of the essence.Comment

Expect LTL freight to be $450-$650 for a 1,000 lb skid of Class 85, if you have a super hookup. $1,000 - $1,500 would be about normal.
Considering the things I would not let out of my possession while moving across country, I would fill a large box trailer and drive it myself.Comment

Just to get an idea of cost for you I asked for a generic bid from uship to ship a pallet of boxes of small arms ammunition from ventura, ca to richmond, Va weighing 900 pounds with a 14 day delivery window. It will be interesting to see what the quotes are. I have used them several times to ship quads/ electronics/ antiques/ processed elk from a hunt in New Mexico, lathe from Oregon.Comment
