Alright I got my air compressor and set it on 30 PSI and blew it out. A ton of dust came out of the vents and internals, some good chunks from the vents. While doing that I noticed this....
Looks like one half of the vent is blocked off

Right side

Left side

Looks like one side (right side) vent is smashed closed..

Bad? Normal?Comment

It looks normal. They probably just made the vent look that big to increase sales.Comment

It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

There's also some apps you can get that will allow you to manually turn the fans on. You can turn them on long before you game so it can keep it cooler longer.
One app is called Speedfan.Last edited by mvanmetertoo; 07-31-2014, 9:30 PM.Comment

Do you have any fans that you can see that are stuck or not moving?
To clean out dust, it is best for you to disassemble as much of the laptop as you can to do a more thorough job.
Last thing, is you may want to invest in a cooling pad. Not one of the USB powered ones but that is AC powered so you get enough movement from the fans. Here is an example of what I am talking about.
Good luck with your PC.Comment

I haven't read through the rest of this thread but I did see you blowing out the vents; which is a good start. The problem sounds like an overheating issue with the video card or CPU or both. If the problem continues, check the thermal paste underneath the heat sink(s) to ensure it hasn't hardened. There are times the paste will harden and lose its heat transferring properties. A good example of that was my own Dell laptop. After about two years, it would power off every time the system was running anything CPU/GPU intensive (gaming, Flash sites, you name it). Cleaned everything out but still had temperature spikes of the CPU and GPU. I finally disassembled the heat sink assembly and, sure enough, the thermal pad/paste underneath both chips were rock hard. Scraped it off and reapplied some Artic Silver. GTG for the last three years. Good luck.Comment

You could try turning down the settings in the games, but if you aren't hearing the fan at all when it used to be audible, then you have serious problem.
Take the fans out and clean them well. Cleaning from the outside isn't likely to fix it at this point. If they still don't work after cleaning, then replace the fans and clean the whole laptop.
To prevent it happening again, make sure you only use it an hard, flat surfaces, not on lap, couch, bed, etc. I use a "portable desk" tray for mine when away from a table.
OT:
What's with all the pron jokes? I'd expect one or two, but this is a bit much. It's a myth anyway.
There was study a while back where they put websites into categories and checked if they tried to infect your computer. The sites in "Religion/Ideology" infected more often than sites in "Pornography".
It makes sense. Paid sites want your credit card number going to them, not to someone else, so they have an incentive to keep their site secure, and have no incentive to ruin their customers' computers.
If you're getting it "free" from some "sharing" site, then you get what you get when you download anything illegal from one of those. Especially if they use a "special" downloading/viewing program. The people make make those sites aren't asking for your credit card, but intend to make money somehow...
Those selling religion and ideas often don't take good care of their sites. It isn't a business system to be protected, it's just a soapbox. If it's up, it's good.
It just occurred to me that we're on an "ideology" website.

After all the times I've been wrong when I thought something was illegal, I sure hope I'm right when I think something's legal!

Did anyone else see this? Malware is not something you want. Hopefully you meant Malwarebytes, a software that detects malware.
Regardless, like most people have said, typically an overheating issue. Best bet is to give it a stress-test. Google Prime95.
If you were near the Bay Area, I'd even help a brother out.God may have made men, but Samuel Colt made them equal.
Send me pics of your: Colt Detective Special, AMT Hardballer, pre-64 Winchester Model 70. I'm looking for them.Comment

best option for you is to upgrade to a desktop due to heating issues. instead of buying a new one from like walmart, best buys, frys etc. why dont you look into building a desktop yourself? you can build a decent one for 1k and a good one for 2k, anything above 2k is just ridiculous to me unless you are a computer nerd. try looking into corsair if you ever plan to build. also one more thing if you are playing games on your bed or any material that conducts and retain heat easily it will overheat you laptop especially when playing games.Last edited by xSARSx; 08-05-2014, 12:49 PM.The internet has given voice for the incredibly stupid peopleComment
