Computer nerds! Why does my Asus keep shutting off?

Alright I need some techie help. I usually hit up my buddy and have him do my PC doctoring but he's been busy. He set up my G74SX notebook for me and it's ran like butter. Anytime it acts up he comes in and fixes it up. Well it's been a little while.

For some reason all of a sudden my computer shuts off and stops working if I play Titanfall or Company Of Heroes or any semi demanding game. When I search the net, watch videos she's fine but as soon as I start to game after about an hour she gets moderately hot and dies. Then I turn the power back on and she resumes windows.

Almost like the load is too heavy. Until recently it has held up fine. I have malware and all the goodies to help keep it running. Anyone have any idea what it is?

And before someone says it, no I don't watch porn on it. Basically all I do is stream/download movies, youtube and here. A few other random sites but nothing major aside from the casual once a month Titanfall or COH game play.

Again only shuts off when I game, when I watch movies or web search she does fine.

Sounds like an overheating issue. Tried getting some canned air in there to blow out the dust and dirt?

Yep that is my guess as well. Could be time to open it up and clean it and possibly reapply thermal compound.

Check the radiator. Its where the air is blown OUT of the laptop. Some laptops even have 2 of them.

A lot of laptops suck air from their bottoms, vacuuming up any dust that's on the surface the computer is sitting on. It then blows onto the little radiator, eventually clogging it from the inside.

You can try blowing air into the radiator from the outside, but the best way is to open the laptop up, remove the fan, and then clean out the radiator - it'll look like there's grey felt on it, or stuck in the fan housing.

I do this all the time for people...

Your system (specifically the CPU) is running to hot so it decides to shut itself down rather than working itself into oblivion. Laptops (especially those capable of intensive gaming) are notorious for poor heat ventilation and airflow (note how large aftermarket heat sinks are for CPUs and how big desktop GPUs have gotten these days) which exasperates the problem.

There's no improvement that can be done to your laptop other than building a decent desktop with thoughtful airflow and cooling solutions. I've seen fan pads that are supposed to help cool laptops but that seems like putting a band aid on a sucking chest wound. If your laptop has options to underclock your CPU/GPU, you could try experimenting with how much performance you need to compromise to ensure the stability of your system.

Just like ARs, building your own desktop is a much more financially sound decision which requires little technical know how on your part and gets you a better platform for the same amount of money you would have spent on either a desktop or laptop through retail.

Ok that's what I was thinking too, but this thing has pretty decent size fans on it. I've gotten it hot once when it was new and these things sound like a vacuum. I don't even think they are coming on.

I'm thinking since all of you said heat maybe the fans aren't working anymore. Also my room is pretty dusty, dogs hang out spot.

It's overheating. Is this a PC or laptop?

                Dust can it.

Yea I just took the bottom cover off. It did have a good bit of dust on the CPU and inner components. I don't have an air can but tomorrow I'll grab the compressor and blow a little air in the internals.

Still don't head the fans going tho

What do the "Event Viewer" logs say?
the ones labeled "critical" might be helpful.

                              Blow out the dust, then

back up your files, and then reimage....send it back to factory settings and it will run like new again.

....you prolly got some "gaming" virus on it that's sucking up all it's resources for it to shut down in defense.
