Thanks for this (and all!) advice.

Safari is a little slower than I'd like and the interface is not as intuitive as I prefer.

Downloading the SRWare Iron brow-wowser now... I'll use it for a couple days and report back.

ETA: Initial impressions of SRWare Iron... Interface just like Chrome, I like that. And it's BLAZING fast, like that too. Report back in a couple days.

You know Mike it probably would be a great idea to reinstall the OS on your laptop. It would help out tremendously.

I find that recent Firefox versions, with the NoScript extension added, are actually good performers on older hardware. The key is the NoScript extension, which prevents all that adware and JavaScript junk from 3rd-party sites. That's part of why memory usage goes up and why things slow down. You can whitelist the sites you want (like www.calguns.net), and that's actually what I do in practice.

Not only does this combination use less resources, it also helps prevent several vectors of "drive-by hacking" attacks.

As for Microsoft's Internet Exploder, you couldn't pay me to use it on my system at home; it's that insecure. I don't even use it at work unless I absolutely *HAVE* to for a specific, clearly very poorly written, internal-only application.

As for your older box, that's now from about 2004. I'd suggest a lightweight GNU/Linux distribution, like Lubuntu or Xubuntu. Alternately, if you're a little geeky (sounds like you might be), Slackware is also a good option. I'd update the hard disk, though. Modern HD's are a lot faster than the older ones. Also, max out your DRAM if you haven't already.

Blue screens are usually a sign of bad RAM or bad temps. Have you checked those?

But to answer your question, Firefox is the only alternative I would use to Chrome.

Firefox is best. Only thing it doesn't have is integrated flash like chrome does. Otherwise it is better in every way.
